Motherhood as a Choice, Not an Obligation: About Women Who Do Not Want to Be Mothers

Niniejsza praca podejmuje temat dobrowolnej bezdzietności wśród kobiet, stanowiący istotny element współczesnych przemian społeczno-kulturowych. Celem było zrozumienie motywacji kobiet, które świadomie rezygnują z macierzyństwa oraz ukazanie tej decyzji nie jako deficytu, ale jako przejaw autonomii i refleksyjnego podejścia do życia. W części teoretycznej omówiono historyczne i kulturowe uwarunkowania roli matki, procesy socjalizacji, wpływ religii, przemiany ról płciowych, czynniki ekonomiczne, a także ideologię antynatalistyczną. Empiryczna część pracy opiera się na analizie wywiadów przeprowadzonych z kobietami, które zdecydowały się na życie bez dzieci. Wyniki wskazują, że decyzja ta często wynika z negatywnych doświadczeń z dzieciństwa i pragnienia samorealizacji. Praca stanowi głos w debacie o redefinicji kobiecości, podkreślając znaczenie prawa do decydowania o własnym życiu bez społecznego napiętnowania.

This thesis explores the topic of voluntary childlessness among women, an increasingly significant aspect of contemporary socio-cultural transformations. The aim was to understand the motivations of women who consciously choose not to become mothers and to present this decision not as a deficiency, but as an expression of autonomy and a reflective approach to life. The theoretical part discusses the historical and cultural conditioning of the maternal role, processes of socialization, the influence of religion, transformations in gender roles, economic factors, and the ideology of antinatalism. The empirical section is based on the analysis of interviews conducted with women who have chosen a childfree life. The findings indicate that this decision often stems from negative childhood experiences and a desire for self-fulfillment. This work contributes to the ongoing debate on the redefinition of womanhood, emphasizing the importance of the right to make personal life choices free from social stigma.
