proton therapy, prompt gamma radiation, PGI - prompt gamma imaging, scintillation detector, coded mask, MURA
Taking into account depth-dose profile of charged particles in matter, proton therapy may be a good alternative to the more popular method - conventional radiotherapy, for treating tumors . However, given the large energy deposit of the beam in a relatively narrow area and the overlapping uncertainties when a larger volume using several beams is covered, it is crucial that the location of maximum deposition is precisely controlled. For the purposes of this thesis simulations and analysis of their results were conducted for a system designed for monitoring proton therapy. The proposed system is using the detection of gamma radiation from the processes taking place in the patient's body as a result of irradiation with a proton beam. The simulated system consisted of: a collimator in the form of a coded mask with a one-dimensional pattern, a detector consisting of scintillation fibers and a source of gamma particles. In order to perform the simulation, a program for implementation in the Geant4 environment, prepared earlier within the SiFi-CC project, was used. Based on the simulation results, the image was being reconstructed - the location of the radiation source. The standard deviation, the difference between the set and the reconstructed position of the source and the background to signal ratio resulting from the reconstructions were analyzed. The simulations were performed with different settings of the following parameters: mask order, number of iterations, relative position of system elements and the position of the source itself. The sizes of the mask rods and detector fibers were set in the simulation on the basis of the actual dimensions of the components prepared the SiFi-CC project. The results indicate that the most advantageous from the proton therapy point of view is the usage of mask patterns that are obtained by cutting out the central fragment of the high-order MURA sequence. With appropriately selected relative positions of the system elements, satisfactory results are obtained - it is possible to reconstruct the source position within tenths of a millimeter with standard deviation values below 1~mm. The obtained results indicate that the size of the mask itself is critical in terms of the quality of the image. The results deteriorate for the peripheral positions of the source, more distant from the axis passing through the center of the system (including the mask). The conducted analysis indicates that the optimal choice is a mask of the order of 467.This master thesis is a part of the project "On-line monitoring of deposited dosedistribution in proton therapy using heavy scintillation fibers" supported by the Polish National Science Centre via the SONATA BIS 2017/26/E/ST2/00618 grant.
