The chosen problems of Africa in Newsweek, Polityka and Wprost in the years 2001-2010

Celem pracy jest analiza sposobu, w jaki wybrane polskie tygodniki opinii przedstawiały problemy kontynentu afrykańskiego w latach 2001-2010. Przy pomocy dwóch narzędzi badawczych - analizy zawartości i analizy dyskursywnej - autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie o obraz Afryki, kreowany przez Newsweek, Politykę i Wprost. Trzy tygodniki przedstawiały problemy kontynentu w stosunkowo podobny sposób. Żaden z nich nie wypracował spójnej polityki redakcyjnej, co znalazło swój wyraz w nieregularności podejmowania tematyki afrykańskiej, jak również w jej niskiej ekspozycyjności. Analizowane tytuły skupiły się na polityce i kwestiach bezpieczeństwa, pisząc głownie o dyktatorskich rządach i konfliktach zbrojnych. Mniej miejsca poświęcono gospodarce, społeczeństwom i religiom, natomiast pozostałe problemy zostały zmarginalizowane. Stosunek większości dziennikarzy do Afrykanów był neutralny, popełniano też niewielką liczbę błędów merytorycznych.

The aim of the thesis is to analyze the manner, in which the chosen polish weekly news magazines presented the problems of Africa in the years 2001-2010. Using two research methods - content analysis and discourse analysis - the author tries to reconstruct the image of Africa created in Newsweek, Polityka and Wprost magazines. As a result of the analyzes, it was stated that three magazines presented Africa in the similar manner. In any of them there was signs of systematic, planned approach to the problems of the continent, which is depicted in irregularity of publishing articles about Africa, as well as in their relatively low exposure. The magazines focused mainly on political and security issues, i.e. dictatorships and armed conflicts. Economy, society, religion were also on the agenda, but to a lesser extent. Other problems, such as culture, were largely marginalized. The attitude of journalists toward Africans were rather neutral, there were also not many mistakes and distortions.
