“A short step away from that uncanny threshold”. In the centre and in the peripheries of “The Bastard of Istanbul” by Elif Şafak

Autor pracy proponuje odczytanie ,,Bękarta ze Stambułu" Elif Şafak z perspektywy peryferii powieści. Z tego, co marginalne w dziele tureckiej pisarki, czyni on rdzeń swoich rozważań. W przedmowie przedstawione są założenia pracy. Rozdział pierwszy przybliża sylwetkę autorki omawianej książki; opowiada o życiu i twórczości literatki. W następnym fragmencie pracy obszarem zainteresowania jej autora jest humor w ,,Bękarcie ze Stambułu". Rozdział trzeci traktuje o obrazach chorób w powieści. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony jest nieprostym relacjom Asyi i jej matki – Zelihy oraz macierzyństwu tej drugiej bohaterki książki. W rozdziale piątym autor rozprawy skupia uwagę na postaci Rose. Kolejny rozdział przybliża bliźniacze przestrzenie Café Kundera i Café Constantinopolis. Zakończenie jest próbą wyjaśnienia, czym dla tureckiej kultury jest omawiana powieść.

The author of the thesis suggests reading “The Bastard of Istanbul” from a peripheral perspective. He makes the core of his dissertation out of what is marginal in the work of the Turkish writer. In the preface the assumptions of thesis are presented. The first chapter introduces the profile of the author of the discussed book; it tells about the life and output of the writer. In the next chapter, the author’s field of interest is humour in “The Bastard of Istanbul”. The third chapter deals with images of illnesses in the novel. The next chapter is devoted to intricate relations between Asya and her mother – Zeliha and the maternity of the latter protagonist of the book. In the fifth chapter the author focuses on the character of Rose. The following chapter presents parallel spaces of Café Kundera and Café Constantinopolis. The ending is an attempt to explain what the discussed novel means for Turkish culture.
