Hulk Hogan - the American social phenomenon of the 1980s

Praca dotyczy tematyki amerykańskiego wrestlingu, a konkretnie najpopularniejszego przedstawiciela tej dyscypliny – Terry’ego „Hulka Hogana” Bollei. Omówiony został wczesny etap jego życia, początki kariery oraz okres, w którym znajdował się on u szczytu sławy (lata 1984-1990). Analiza fenomenu postaci została podparta tłem historyczno-społecznym, a także kulturowym, ze szczególnym naciskiem na kulturę popularną lat 80. XX wieku oraz ówczesny kult „superbohaterów” w amerykańskich mediach. Celem poprawnej percepcji tego zjawiska, opisana została również historia wrestlingu oraz obowiązujące w nim zasady i specyficzny żargon. Część merytoryczną pracy zamyka krótkie posłowie, streszczające dalsze losy zarówno Hulka Hogana, jak i całej branży.

This paper focuses on professional wrestling, more specifically, on the most popular representative of this discipline - Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea. The following issues were discussed - the early years of Hogan’s life, the beginnings of his career and the period when he was on the top (1984 – 1990). The analysis of Hogan’s phenomenon was supported by historical, social and cultural background, with particular emphasis on the popular culture of the 1980s and the cult of "superheroes" in American media. In order to correctly perceive this phenomenon, the history of wrestling was also introduced, as well as its rules and specific jargon. The substantive part of the work ends with short afterword, summarizing the further fate of both Hulk Hogan and the entire industry of wrestling.
