Muslims in the United States of America. Integration or radicalization?

Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej było przedstawienie sytuacji muzułmanów, którzy żyją na terenach Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki. Rozważania dotyczą tolerancji, przenikania kultur oraz uprzedzeń, które kształtują się w świadomości Amerykanów i destruktywnie wpływają na wyznawców islamu. W dużej mierze zachowania i wzrost islamofobii nasilił się po wydarzeniach z 11 września 2001 roku. Nie ma cienia wątpliwości, że wydarzenia zmieniły życie milionów ludzi. Praca ukazuje islam w wymiarze nie tylko duchowno- religijnym ale pokazuje również jego rolę w rzeczywistości politycznej, ekonomicznej i społecznej. Praca składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej z nich przedstawiony został ogólny zarys islamu oraz historia związana z ugrupowaniem Czarnych Muzułmanów uznanych za najbardziej wpływowych i radykalnych, walczących w imię swojej godności i wolności. W tym rozdziale zawarte są również informacje dotyczące obecnego kształtu amerykańskiej populacji muzułmańskiej. Druga zasadnicza część pracy przedstawia analizę badań i raportów pokazujących problem gorszego traktowania muzułmanów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Pojawiają się zagadnienia z wiązane z muzułmańskimi fundamentalistami oraz szeroko analizowany jest problem islamofobii. Ostatnia część pracy przedstawia medialny wizerunek amerykańskich muzułmanów. Analiza dotyczy rozważań nad tym na ile islam przedstawiany jest obiektywnie a na ile ulega on zniekształceniu. Praca próbuje znaleźć odpowiedz na podstawowe pytanie czy amerykańscy muzułmanie obecnie szukają rozwiązań swoich problemów poprzez radykalizację czy integrację ze społeczeństwem USA. Praca przedstawia przekrojowo rozwój islamu w Stanach Zjednoczonych od XVIII do XXI wieku. Od czasu kiedy przybywali aby pracować na plantacjach do wydarzeń World Trade Center oraz konsekwencji, które spowodował atak terrorystyczny. Biorąc pod uwagę obszerną tematykę pracy do jej napisania zostały wykorzystane rozmaite źródła. Wiele interesujących książek było dostępne poza granicami naszego kraju dzięki mojej koleżance mieszkającej i studiującej w Denver udało mi się pozyskać kilka interesujących pozycji. Poza tym moja praca umożliwia mi codzienny dostęp do wielu dzienników takich jak „The New York Times’ czy „Washington Post”, dzięki czemu mogłam na bieżąco śledzić wydarzenia związane z amerykańskimi muzułmanami.

The purpose of present M.A thesis was to present Muslims who live in the United States of America. I speculate about tolerance, an interpenetration of cultures and prejudices which create in American’s mind and have disruptive influence on Muslims. The intensification of negative behaviour and islamophobiais growing in the United States was until the 11th of September 2001. On that memorable day, life in America stopped for a while. Unexpectedly, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center Towers, leaving indescribable pain, tears and terror. There is no a shadow of doubt that terrorist assassinations brought about considerable changes in the mindsets of millions of people. The events of the 11th of September 2001 were not fortuitous, yet they resulted from the American- Muslim conflict that developed over many years. It is worth noticing that American and Muslim culture, mentality, faith and lifestyle vary from each other in many aspects and certainly these differences contributed to the dispute in a considerable way. My thesis shows Islam not only as a religion but also its political and economic aspects. I have divided my thesis into three parts and I would like to attempt to clarify different things connected to Muslims who live in the United States. First chapter clarifies key notions referring to Islam religion and Black Muslims who historically have been specifically used to refer to nationalist organizations and they described themselves as Muslim fighting in order to get freedom and dignity. This chapter presents information about Muslim population in the USA and some considerations about the fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and also in America.The second chapter shows problem of Muslim discrimination. It was taken different reports and researches for analysis which show that Muslims face to islamophobia. Moreover, I have mention about Islamic fundamentalist who turn to the fundamentals of Islam. The last paragraph shows how the mass media present Muslims who live in the United States. Radicalization or integration? The thesis shows Islam in the United States from 18th century to 21 th century. When they were working on the planation through the events of the 11th of September 2001. Furthermore, it was written about consequence of terrorist attack and it was shown Muslim’s life after that. Taking variety of my thesis into consideration I have been forced to use different resources. Many books were unavailable in Poland so thanks to my friend who lives and studies in Denver I had access to different articles and books. Moreover, I work for the information company and qualitative media monitoring so I have access to American newspapers like The New York Times or Washington Post. When I was writing my thesis I stayed current with general situation of American Muslims.
