Characteristics and causes of the phenomenon of endemism, based on the example of the Australian continent

Praca opisuje główne przyczyny występowania endemitów w faunie australijskiej oraz dokładnie analizuje związki przyczynowo skutkowe, które doprowadziły do pojawienia się na tym kontynencie, tak unikatowych organizmów. Znacząco podkreśla ona znaczenie geologii, dryfu kontynentów oraz samej izolacji kontynentu australijskiego na wczesnym etapie jego kształtowania się. We wstępnych częściach opisywana jest historia powstania kontynentu, ogólna jego geografia oraz zróżnicowanie poszczególnych, często odmiennych siedlisk, będących środowiskiem życia australijskiej fauny i flory. Główna część pracy poświęcona jest dokładnym przyczynom i skutkom izolacji Australii na przestrzeni lat, od momentu jej powstania do dnia dzisiejszego, a także charakterystyce wybranych grup organizmów, przede wszystkim kręgowców, uznawanych za gatunki endemiczne. Prócz tego pojawia się objaśnienie zjawiska mikroendemizmu, gdzie również omówione zostają warunki oraz przyczyny jego występowania wraz z przykładami. W końcowej części pracy poruszony został fakt powszechności występowania gatunków kosmopolitycznych na kontynencie australijskim, gdzie przedstawione zostają różnorodne przyczyny braku endemizmu, poparte przykładami. The paper describes the main causes of endemism in Australian fauna and examines in detail the cause and effect relationships that led to the appearance of such unique organisms on the continent. It significantly emphasises the importance of geology, continental drift and the isolation of the Australian continent in its early formation. The introductory sections describe the history of the continent's formation, its general geography, and the diversity of the different, often disparate habitats that provide habitat for the Australian biota. The main part of the work is dedicated to the precise causes and consequences of Australia's isolation over the years and also characteristics of selected groups of organisms, especially vertebrates, considered as endemic species. In addition, there is an explanation of the microendemism, where the conditions and causes of its occurrence are also discussed with examples. The final part of the paper, deals with the prevalence of cosmopolitan species on the Australian continent, where various reasons for the lack of endemism are presented, supported by examples. In conclusion, the paper focuses on collecting and systematizing the content raised. There are also considerations as to whether Australia, as a continent rich in endemic species, can be a model example, and whether on the basis of the knowledge of the history of this continent, as well as the mechanisms that led to the appearance of such rare fauna or flora on this continent, it is possible to speculate on the reasons for the appearance of endemic species in other places on earth.
