Bad faith as inauthentic existence in philosophy and literature of Jean–Paul Sartre

Celem tej pracy jest analiza filozoficznej koncepcji złej wiary Jean–Paul Sartre'a oraz jej związku z jego powieścią Mdłości. Skupiając się na wybranym aspekcie filozofii egzystencjalnej Sartre'a i ukazując mechanizmy, w wyniku których jednostka popada w nieautentyczność egzystencji wskazuję w rozprawie na kluczowe podobieństwa między teorią egzystencji nieautentycznej zawartą w Bycie i nicości a głównym motywem Mdłości. To porównanie pozwala na interpretację powieści jako literackiego zastosowania filozoficznych koncepcji Sartre'a. W wyniku analizy postaci i narracji Mdłości, rozprawa wskazuje źródło dylematu egzystencjalnego podmiotu. Wnioski płynące z tej analizy podkreślają istotę autentyczności w życiu jednostki oraz ścisły związek filozofii egzystencjalnej z twórczością literacką Sartre’a.

The aim of this work is to analyze Jean–Paul Sartre's philosophical concept of bad faith and its relation to his novel Nausea. Focusing on a selected aspect of Sartre's existential philosophy and demonstrating the mechanisms through which an individual falls into the inauthenticity of existence by adopting bad faith, the paper highlights key similarities between the theory of inauthentic existence presented in Being and nothingness and the main theme of Nausea. This comparison allows for the interpretation of the novel as a literary application of Sartre's philosophical concepts. Through the analysis of characters and narrative in Nausea, the paper points out the source of the existential dilemma of the subject. The conclusions drawn from this analysis emphasize the importance of authenticity in an individual's life and the close relationship between Sartre’s existential philosophy and his literary works.
