The poetics of space in Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelleas and Melisande (1892)

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza roli przestrzeni i składających się na nią elementów w sztuce Peleas i Melisanda Maurice’a Maeterlincka (1892). Przestrzeń jest badana pod kątem subiektywności i relacji z psychiką postaci. W pierwszym rozdziale opisuję podział przestrzeni, szczególnie didaskalia, uwięzienie postaci i zestawienie „tutaj” z „tam”. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony opisowi i analizie elementów przestrzeni (wody, światła, ciemności i ciszy) oraz ich wpływowi na stworzenie atmosfery locus horridus w tekście. Analiza przestrzeni ukazuje jej fundamentalne znaczenie dla interpretacji dzieła.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is the analysis of the role of space and its components in Maurice Maeterlinck’s play Pelleas and Melisande (1892). The space is investigated in terms of its subjectivity and its connection with the protagonists’ psyche. In the first chapter, I describe the division of space, notably the decor and the didaskalia, the imprisonment of the protagonists and the juxtaposition between „here” and “there”. The second chapter is aiming to describe and analyse the elements of space (water, light, darkness, and silence) and their influence on creating the ambiance of locus horridus. The study of space reveals the crucial importance of the latter in the interpretation of the play.

L’objectif de ce mémoire de licence est l’analyse du rôle de l’espace et des éléments qui le constituent dans la pièce Pelléas et Mélisande de Maurice Maeterlinck (1892). L’espace est étudié sous l’angle de la subjectivité et la relation avec la psyché des personnages. Le premier chapitre aborde la question de la division de l’espace; l’analyse porte sur les didascalies, l’emprisonnement des personnages et la juxtaposition entre « ici » et « là-bas ». Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à la description et à l’analyse des éléments de l’espace (l’eau, la lumière, l’obscurité et le silence) et de leur effet sur la création de l’ambiance de locus horridus dans le récit. L’étude de l’espace démontre l’importance de celui-ci pour l’interprétation de l’œuvre.
