Zwierzęta a problem moralny w Hańbie J.M. Coetzee'ego

W dzisiejszych czasach coraz częściej porusza się tematykę praw zwierząt. Wiele osób próbuje poprawić warunki życia zwierząt oraz walczy o ich godność. J.M. Coetzee również włącza się w ten ogólnoświatowy ruch. W jego powieści zatytułowanej Hańba zwierzęta pełnią niezwykle istotną rolę. Wpływają one na głównego bohatera - Davida Lurie. To dzięki nim zmienia się on i w nieco większym stopniu zaczyna interesować losem zwierząt.Niniejsza praca skupia się na analizie roli zwierząt w Hańbie. Zwraca także uwagę na różnice pomiędzy ich przedstawieniem w pierwszej i drugiej części powieści. Oprócz tego, porusza wspomnianą już kwestię obrony praw zwierząt i pokazuje związek między zwierzętami a życiem autora. Praca skupia się na zagadnieniu moralności głównego bohatera i zmianom jakie w nim zachodzą. Jednak, w przeciwieństwie do niektórych interpretacji, w pracy wykazano, że zmiana ta nie jest na tyle znacząca pod względem moralnym jak mogłyby się wydawać na pierwszy rzut oka.

Nowadays more and more people become interested in the subject of animal rights; many talk and fight for animals in order to improve their living conditions. Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee takes part in the discussion about the animal rights as well. The animals’ role is of a great significance in the novel. The protagonist of the novel, David Lurie, in his own way also contributes to this discussion about animals. In the course of the book, he changes and gains some interest in the animals surrounding him.The thesis focuses on the analysis of the appearance of animals in Disgrace; it presents the comprehensive image of them and shows the difference between the animals in the first and the second part of the novel. The emphasis is also put on the animal ethics and the way it is presented in Disgrace. It discusses the connection between Coetzee and animals and their presence in his fiction. Moreover, it concentrates on the morality of the protagonist and, in contrast to some readings of Disgrace, tries to prove that David Lurie does not morally improve in the course of the novel in a significant way.
