Zwykłe Zjadaczki Chleba: Postacie Kobiece w Nie opuszczaj mnie Kazuo Ishiguro i Opowieści podręcznej Margaret Atwood

Tematem niniejszej pracy są bohaterki powieści dystopijnych, Kathy H. będąca protagonistką Nie opuszczaj mnie Kazuo Ishiguro oraz Offred, bohaterka Opowieści podręcznej autorstwa Margaret Atwood. W początkowych rozdziałach wyjaśniam pojęcia utopii i dystopii oraz przedstawiam zwięźle historię rozwoju gatunku. Następnie zestawiam postacie Kathy H. i Offred z bohaterkami powieści dystopijnych dedykowanych młodym czytelnikom. Pozwala mi to wskazać kluczową różnicę między tymi dwoma parami bohaterek, a mianowicie fakt, że postacie kobiecie w książkach dla młodych dorosłych, są odważnymi i silnymi buntowniczkami, natomiast Kathy H. i Offred są niewyróżniającymi się z tłumu, przeciętnymi kobietami. Pozwalam sobie nazywać je dalej „zwykłymi zjadaczkami chleba” i na ich historiach się skupić. Porównuję losy tych dwóch postaci pod względem sposobów, w jakie dystopijne społeczeństwa oddziałują na ich życie i to jak radzą sobie one w tak trudnych warunkach. Zastanawiam się też, co może stanowić przyczynę różnicy pomiędzy ich podejściem do świata przedstawionego, którego są częścią.

The subject of this thesis concerns female protagonists of dystopian novels, namely, Kathy H. from Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and Offred from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. In the opening chapter, I introduce shortly the notions of utopia and dystopia. I also provide a brief outline of the evolvement of the dystopian novel genre throughout history. In the following part of my work, I contrast Kathy H. and Offred with heroines from popular Young Adult dystopian novels. I stress the fact that the protagonists of the novels dedicated to the young audience are strong and brave rebels while Kathy H. and Offred are might be considered ordinary individuals. That is why I decide to dub them “dystopian everywomen”. I focus on a comparison of Kathy H. and Offred in order to find similarities and differences in the way dystopian regimes oppress them, how they cope with such difficult circumstances and what may be the reason for the discrepancy between their attitudes to the realities they find themselves in.
