Voodoo in New Orleans - religion created by tourism

Poniższa praca bierze sobie za cel analizę odwiecznego związku jaki łączy nowoorleański kult voodoo z przemysłem turystycznym. Obserwacja skomplikowanej historii miasta pozwala zrozumieć mechanizmy, które doprowadziły do połączenia się dwóch tak odległych od siebie płaszczyzn. Jako miasto portowe, Nowy Orlean od zawsze przyciągał odwiedzających oraz imigrantów pochodzących z różnych grup etnicznych. Poskutkowało to powstaniem szczególnego klimatu miasta, a także silnego przemysłu rozrywkowego i turystycznego, które mają swoje odbicie w wielu elementach nowoorleańskiego voodoo praktykowanego współcześnie. Celem niniejszej pracy jest udowodnienie, iż kult nie egzystowałby w swojej obecnej formie, gdyby nie wpływ turystyki i że do dziś pozostaje on od niej uzależniony.

This dissertation is aimed to provide the analysis of the perennial relationship, that links New Orleans cult of Voodoo with the tourism industry within the city. Observation of the complicated history of the Big Easy allows us to understand the mechanisms, that led to the combination of two spheres so distant from one another. As a port town, New Orleans has been luring people of different ethnic descents since the foundation of the city. It resulted in the emergence of a particular climate of the town, as well as in the appearance of a strong entertainment and tourism industry, that instructed many elements of the New Orleans Voodoo as it is being practiced today. The aim of the following dissertation is to prove that the cult would not exist in its contemporary form, if it was not for the tourism influence and that it remains dependent on it.
