Chociaż postać sidekicka jest powszechnie znana i wykorzystywana w kinie, poświęca jej się stosunkowo niewiele uwagi. Pomimo tego, że pomocnik bohatera często jest nieodzowny, niewiele jest literatury traktującej o tej postaci i jej funkcji w filmie.Niniejsza praca analizuje postać znaną jako sidekick w amerykańskim oraz brytyjskim kinie i podejmuje się wytłumaczenia tego zjawiska poprzez odpowiedzenie na poniższe pytania:Czy postać sidekicka zmieniała się z czasem?Jeśli tak, jak zmieniała się ona w poszczególnych dekadach?Czy jest różnica pomiędzy sposobem przedstawia sidekicka w filmach akcji a dramatach?Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, został skonstruowany kwestionariusz dotyczący przedstawienia postaci sidekicka, jego relacji z głównym bohaterem I funkcji sidekicka w narracji. Do badania została wybrana grupa czterdziestu dziewięciu filmów, wyprodukowanych pomiędzy 1950. a 2014. rokiem.Teoretyczna część pracy porównuje wybrane istniejące definicje sidekicka pod względem różnic I podobieństw. Następnie na potrzeby badania I pracy zostaje utworzona nowa definicja. Ten rozdział zawiera również wyjaśnienie metodologii wykorzystanej w badaniach. Kolejna część pracy zawiera wyniki badań I interpretacji, jak I próbę odpowiedzi na wyżej wymienione pytania.Ostatni rozdział pracy porównuje te same postaci w różnych adaptacjach., aby ustalić, czy sposoby przedstawiania tych samych sidekicków zmieniały się z czasem. Postaci wybrane do tej analizy to Dr John Watson, Tonto, Robin i Alfred Pennyworth.

The character of the protagonist's sidekick, although widely known and commonly employed by the cinema, hardly ever receive much attention and acclaim. The hero's companions often prove to be indispensable, nevertheless very little is written about this character and their function in the movie.This thesis analyses the character known as sidekick in American and British cinema and attempts to explain the phenomenon by answering the following questions: Has the institution of sidekick developed or evolved with time? If yes, how did the portrayal of sidekick change in different decades?Is there a difference between the portrayal of sidekick in drama and action movies?In order to answer those question, a research questionnaire has been constructed, regarding the characterisation of the sidekick, the relationship with the protagonist and the function of the sidekick in the plot. A sample of forty nine movies, produced between year 1950 and 2014, has been chosen for the research. The theoretical part of this thesis confronts various definitions of sidekick, considering concurrences and differences between them, and eventually coining the definition of the character, that will be used henceforth for the purpose of this thesis. Further on, the methodology of the research conducted is described. The following chapter presents the results of the research, provides an interpretation of the results and answers the questions listed above. Furthermore, the last chapter confronts different portrayals of specific secondary characters in order to determine whenever the the approach towards the same sidekick characters has changed with time. The characters chosen for the analysis are Dr. John Watson, Tonto, Robin and Alfred Pennyworth.
