Mothers in the works of Ivan Turgenev

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest matkom w twórczości Iwana Turgieniewa, a w szczególności matkom-aniołom i matkom-fatalnym. Celem pracy jest zbadanie i zaprezentowanie typów rodzicielek w literaturze Iwana Turgieniewa. Przedstawienie ich cech, a także charakterystycznych zachowań. Tak dwa skrajnie odmienne typy opiekunek zostały wybrane, aby pokazać jak różnie Turgieniew przedstawiał je w swoich utworach, a także jak silny wpływ wywierają rodzice na swoje dzieci. Niniejsza praca zawiera cztery rozdziały. Pierwszy rozdział nosi tytuł Rodzina Turgieniewów. Poznajemy tam relacje panujące między członkami rodziny. Przedstawione zostają zarówno sylwetki rodziców Iwana Siergiejewicza – Warwary Pietrownej i Siergieja Nikołajewicza, jak i również samego pisarza. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest życiu miłosnemu Turgieniewa. Czytelnik zapoznaje się z kobietami, które odegrały ważną rolę w życiu artysty są to: Katarzyna Szachowska, Awdotia Iwanowa, Pauline Viardot. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawione są matki-fatalne. Tutaj są przedstawione: Pani Jelcowa z Fausta, Księżna Zasiekina i matka Włodzimierza z Pierwszej miłości. Czwarty rozdział jest zatytułowany matki-anioły, jego bohaterkami są: Leonora Roselli z Wiosennych wód, Fiedosja Nikolajewna i Arina Własiewna z Ojców i dzieci. W każdym z rozdziałów podkreślone są charakterystyczne cechy wybranego typu matek, dzięki którym Turgieniew stworzył te postacie, a także ich relacje z dziećmi i to jak ich działania wpływają na życie dzieci. Jednymi z głównych cech matek-fatalnych były: brak instynktu macierzyńskiego, a także niezrozumienie dla swoich pociech, przy czym dla matek-aniołów najważniejszymi rzeczami w życiu było szczęście i powodzenie w życiu ich podopiecznych. Należy jednak pamiętać, że każda z przedstawionych matek posiada cechy indywidualne, które czynią ją wyjątkową.

This master's thesis is dedicated to mothers in the works of Ivan Turgenev, particularly angelic mothers and femme fatale mothers. The main aim of the thesis is to examine and present the types of mothers depicted in Ivan Turgenev's literature. Their characteristics and distinctive behaviors are presented. These two contrasting types of caregivers were chosen to demonstrate how differently Turgenev portrayed them in his works and the strong influence parents have on their children. This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is titled "The Turgenev Family," where the relationships among family members are explored. It presents profiles of both Ivan Sergeyevich's parents - Varvara Petrovna and Sergey Nikolaevich - as well as the writer himself. The second chapter focuses on Turgenev's love life. The reader is introduced to the women who played important roles in the artist's life: Katherina Shakhovskaya, Avdotya Ivanova, and Pauline Viardot. The third chapter presents the Femme Fatale Mothers. Characters such as Madame Eltzoff from Faust, Princess Zasyekin, and Vladimir's mother from First Love are discussed. The fourth chapter is titled Angel Mothers, and its heroines are Leonora Roselli from Spring Torrents, Fedosya Nikolayevna, and Arina Vlasyevna from Fathers and Sons. Each chapter emphasizes the distinctive traits of the chosen types of mothers, which Turgenev used to create these characters, as well as their relationships with their children and how their actions influence their children's lives. Some of the main characteristics of the femme fatale mothers were the lack of maternal instinct and a lack of understanding for their offspring, while for the angel mothers, the most important things in life were the happiness and success of their wards. However, it is important to remember that each of the presented mothers possesses individual traits that make her unique.
