An attempt to implement the Sentences Modeling Test to assess the linguistic competence of children aged 5-8

The thesis is based on the results of the language test draft (Sentences Modeling Test ), conducted among children in three age groups: 5, 6 and 8-year-olds.The test was created by Magdalena Smoczyńska Doc., PhD hab. of the Jagiellonian University on the need of testing 8-year-olds conducted in 2010, by the Research Laboratory on the Child Language. The aim of this paper is to assess children language skills, on the basis of the above mentioned test and its effectiveness in this regard. The test results come from children whose language level is in a set standard, as well as from those that are below it. The work includes a theoretical part on children language development at the preschool and primary school age, as well as characteristics of Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and the typology of complex subordinate clauses with particular emphasis on relative sentences. The second part of the thesis, is a detailed analysis of the gathered empirical material, preceded by information on individual stages of the research, description of research tool, ie, Sentences Modeling Test, and the proposed method of its evaluation and scoring. The core part of the paper, consists of an analysis of results, analysis of tasks difficulty and the analysis of the types of errors made by children in various types of grammatical structures.

Praca ta oparta jest na wynikach roboczej wersji testu językowego (Test Tworzenia Zdań wg Modelu), przeprowadzonego wśród dzieci w trzech grupach wiekowych: 5, 6 i 8-latków. Test ten został stworzony przez doc. dr hab. Magdalenę Smoczyńską z Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego na potrzebę badań 8-latków przeprowadzanych w 2010 roku przez Pracownię Badań nad Językiem Dziecka. Celem pracy jest próba oceny kompetencji językowych badanych dzieci na podstawie wspomnianego testu oraz jego skuteczności w tym zakresie. Wyniki testu pochodzą od dzieci, które mieszczą się w wyznaczonej normie pod względem poziomu języka, a także od tych, które znajdują się poniżej ustalonej normy. Praca zawiera część teoretyczną dotyczącą rozwoju mowy dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i wczesnoszkolnym, charakterystyki Specyficznego Zaburzenia Językowego (SLI), a także typologii zdań podrzędnie złożonych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zdań względnych. Drugą część pracy stanowi szczegółowa analiza zgromadzonego materiału empirycznego, poprzedzona informacjami na temat poszczególnych etapów prowadzonych badań, opisem narzędzia badawczego, tj. Testu Tworzenia Zdań wg Modelu, oraz propozycją sposobu jego oceniania i punktowania. Na część właściwą pracy składa się analiza wyników badanych dzieci, analiza trudności zadań oraz analiza rodzajów błędów popełnianych przez dzieci w poszczególnych typach konstrukcji gramatycznych.
