The influence of participation in the Visegrad Summer School program on the participants' attitudes towards different cultures and their functioning in a multicultural environment

Kontakt międzygrupowy i jego wpływ na redukcję uprzedzeń jest często badany w psychologii społecznej. Celem niniejszej pracy jest eksploracja wpływu, jaki kontakt międzygrupowy może mieć na osoby otwarte i pozbawione uprzedzeń. Zdaniem autorki zrozumienie, jak w sytuacji międzygrupowego spotkania zachowują się osoby świadomie dążące do kontaktu, przyczyni się do lepszego zrozumienia procesów leżących u podłożą zachowań, a co za tym idzie, wesprze pozytywne przemiany społeczne. Drugim celem badań było zrozumienie sposobu, w jaki program Letniej Szkoły Wyszehradzkiej wpływa na jej uczestników oraz przygotowanie rekomendacji do dalszego rozwoju projektu. Na podstawie wstępnych analiz jakościowych spodziewano się, że udział w projekcie będzie związany (1) z obniżeniem poziomu motywacji do redukcji niepewności (tzw. potrzeby domknięcia poznawczego, ang. need for cognitive closure - NFCC); (2) z rozwojem samoświadomości kulturowej; (3) ze wzrostem samooceny kolektywnej na wymiarach: kraju pochodzenia, regionu – Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, globalnej społeczności młodych ludzi zainteresowanych kwestiami społecznymi. Wbrew oczekiwaniom, poziom NFCC zwiększył się po zakończeniu projektu. Ze względu na brak wystarczających danych nie udało się zweryfikować 2. hipotezy, a w zakresie 3. hipotezy uzyskane wyniki wskazały na brak różnic przed i po projekcie. Mimo uzyskania wyników innych niż spodziewane, ich analiza pozwoliła na wyciągnięcie wartościowych wniosków oraz opracowania rekomendacji dla organizatorów projektu.

Intergroup contact and its impact on the reduction of prejudices is often studied in social psychology. The aim of this study is to explore the impact that intergroup contact can have on open and unbiased people. According to the author, understanding how people who consciously seek contact behave in the situation of an intergroup meeting will contribute to a better understanding of the underlying processes, and thus support positive social changes. The second objective of the research was to understand how the programme of the Visegrad Summer School affects its participants and to prepare recommendations for further development of the project. Based on preliminary qualitative analyses, it was expected that participation in the project would be associated with (1) a reduction in the level of motivation to reduce uncertainty (the so-called need for cognitive closure - NFCC); (2) the development of cultural self-awareness; (3) an increase in collective self-esteem on the dimensions of: country of origin, region - Central and Eastern Europe, global community of young people interested in social issues. Contrary to expectations, the level of the NFCC increased after the end of the project. Due to the lack of sufficient data, it was not possible to verify the 2nd hypothesis, and with regard to the 3rd hypothesis, the obtained results indicated that there were no differences before and after the project. Despite obtaining results other than expected, their analysis made it possible to draw valuable conclusions and develop recommendations for the project organizers.
