Oneiric motifs in selected short stories about Sinbad by Gyula Krúdy

Głównym tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tekstów wybranych opowiadań węgierskiego pisarza, Gyuli Krúdyego (1878–1933) o Sindbadzie Żeglarzu. Niniejsza praca skupia się sklasyfikowaniu typowych dla pisarza zabiegów stylistycznych oraz zidentyfikowaniu ich w sześciu różnych opowiadaniach wydanych na przestrzeni lat 1911–1932. Praca składa się z trzech zasadniczych rozdziałów: 1. Życiorys Gyuli Krúdyego, 2. Oniryzm w kulturze i literaturze oraz 3. Motywy oniryczne w wybranych opowiadaniach o Sindbadzie Żeglarzu autorstwa Gyuli Krúdyego. Pierwszy rozdział podejmuje przybliżenie postaci pisarza z podkreśleniem wpływu alkoholizmu i stylu życia z nim związanego na twórczość. Drugi rozdział wyjaśnia pojęcie oniryzmu oraz motywów onirycznych (sennych) w dziełach kultury i dziełach literackich na przestrzeni wieków. Trzeci rozdział jest analizą wybranych opowiadań (Młode lata, Sen Sindbada, Opowieść o zbłąkanej kobiecie, Biesiada o północy, Z pieniędzmi na pielgrzymkę i Powrót żeglarza (W staroświeckim mieście) ze szczególnym podkreśleniem znaczenia snu w danych opowiadaniach.

The main focus of the following thesis is an analysis of selected short stories of a Hungarian writer, Gyula Krúdy (1878–1933), depicting the life of Sindbad the Sailor. This thesis provides classification of specific for Krúdy’s literary work stylistic devices and underlining them in six short stories, that were written by Krúdy between the year 1911 and 1932. This dissertation includes three chapters: 1. The Life of Gyula Krúdy, 2. Onirism used in Culture and in Litareture, 3. Use of Oniric Motives in Selected Short Stories about Sindbad the Sailor written by Gyula Krúdy. The first chapter, in short, displays the life of Gyula Krúdy with the emphasis on the writer’s alcohol addiction and way of living life, that played key role in his short stories. Second chapter focuses on understanding the meaning of the word onirism and oniric (dreamlike) motives in the culture and in the literature throughout the centuries. The third chapter provides the main analysis of the selected short stories about Sindbad the Sailor’s life. The analysis demonstrates the stylistic devices that Krúdy used to create dreamlike atmosphere, aura and setting.
