Social characteristics of Internet vigilantism illustrated on the example of „Human Flesh Search Engine” in China

Niniejsza praca dotyczy fenomenu Internetowego wigilantyzmu w Chinach określanego nazwą „Human Flesh Search Engine” lub krócej „Human Flesh Search” (HFS). Zrozumienie tego zjawiska wymaga poznania pojęć wigilantyzmu i cyberwigilantyzmu. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawione zostały definicje tych pojęć, ich geneza oraz różnice pomiędzy nimi w zestawieniu z HFS. Drugi rozdział jest bardziej szczegółową analizą konkretnych przypadków HFS, wyróżnia też różne formy fenomenu HFS w chińskim Internecie. Trzeci rozdział wyjaśnia jak popularność HFS jest zakorzeniona w fundamentalnych zasadach rządzących współczesnym chińskim społeczeństwem. Ostatni, czwarty rozdział jest próbą rozważenia jakie wyzwania i problemy może nieść za sobą cyberwigilantyzm, w tym również jego chiński odpowiednik.

This dissertation refers to the Internet vigilantism phenomenon in China, named "Human Flesh Search Engine" or "Human Flesh Search" (HFS) in shorter form. Understanding this phenomenon requires comprehending the concepts of vigilantism and cyber-vigilantism itself. The first chapter provides definitions, genesis, and differences between these notions, in comparison with HFS. The second chapter is a more insightful analysis of specific HFS cases, as well as a highlight of different forms of HFS phenomenon in the Chinese internet. The third part provides an explanation of how HFS is rooted in the fundamental rules of contemporary Chinese society. Finally, the fourth chapter explores the idea of challenges and problems that cyber-vigilantism and its Chinese equivalent may cause.
