Between the Scylla of community and the Charybdis of individualism: an attempt to understand the Rainbow Family gatherings from a neo-tribalistic perspective.

Praca stanowi próbę ukazania trybalizmu, a więc zjawiska kształtowania się czasowych wspólnot empatycznych, jako swoistego terenu zmagań między targającymi jednostką dążeniami indywidualistycznymi a pozornie opozycyjną im chęcią przełamania izolacjonizmu i wraz z nim nasilającego się osamotnienia. Fenomen nowoplemienności potraktowany został tu zatem jako rodzaj odpowiedzi na pogłębiającą się bezdomność człowieka w świecie, na zataczającą coraz szersze kręgi, detradycjonalizację i kroczącą w ślad za nią konieczność tożsamościowego samookreślenia. Dodatkowo zaś, podążając za propozycją Olcoń-Kubickiej, istotną stała się tu chęć ukazania tego, iż stanowić może on przestrzeń manifestacji indywidualizmu „wewnątrz grupy ludzi podobnie odczuwających”. Możliwość przyjrzenia się powyżej zaznaczonemu zagadnieniu przybliżona została poprzez analizę zjawiska, jakim są, uznane za przykład nowoplemiennej wspólnoty, Zgromadzenia Rodziny Tęczy. Sposobem tym, zasadniczym celem podjętych badań terenowych stała się próba odtworzenia wspólnotowo konstruowanego symbolicznego uniwersum, próba przybliżenia pojęciowego świata, w którym to wspólnie poruszają się obecne na zgromadzeniu osoby. Chodziło więc tu o zaobserwowanie tego, jak nowoplemienna gromada pod wpływem emanowanego przez siebie ciepła przeistacza się we wspólnotę znaczeń, w której to odczucie jedności i bliskości oraz możliwość indywidualnej ekspresji i poszukiwania zdają się iść z sobą w parze.

This thesis seeks to present tribalism - and specifically the development of temporary intentional communities - as an area of struggle between individualistic strivings tormenting the individual and the (apparently opposing) desires to overcome isolation and the alienation it causes. The phenomenon of neo-tribalism is treated as an answer to the deepening homelessness of human beings in the world, to the spreading destruction of traditions, and to the concomitant necessity for self-definition. Additionally, following the conclusions of Olcoń-Kubicka, it has become important to ascertain whether emotional tribes might be an opportunity for individualism to assert itself "within a group of similarly sensitive people".The idea of examining these question was suggested by an analysis of the Rainbow Family gatherings, a phenomenon recognized as an example of neo-tribal community. The goal of the field research was to delineate their collectively formed symbolic universe and so to investigate the semantic world in which the attendants of these gatherings co-exist. My intention was above all to observe how this neo-tribal group, under the influence of warmth radiated from itself, transforms into a community rich in meanings, where the feeling of unity and closeness and the possibility of individual exploration and expression seem to go hand in hand.
