Feminism, Second-Wave, Betty Friedan, Heteronormativity, Lesbian Feminism
This thesis examines the influence of Betty Friedan’s activism, her groundbreaking book The Feminine Mystique, and the criticism it subsequently attracted, on the development of Second Wave feminism in the United States. It begins by exploring the historical and cultural context of the post-war era, addressing the gender norms and domestic ideals that defined and constrained women’s lives at the time. It then analyses Friedan’s central arguments in The Feminine Mystique, including her critique of the feminine ideal, the lack of educational and professional opportunities for women, and the structural inequalities embedded in American society. The thesis goes on to examine the concrete impact of her activism, including the founding of the National Organization for Women and the legislative changes that followed. The second part of the thesis addresses Friedan’s ideological shortcomings, with particular focus on heteronormativity. Her failure to adopt an intersectional approach, one that accounts for the overlapping systems of oppression faced by women of colour, working-class women, and lesbian women, created significant divisions within the movement and drove many women to create independent groups. The thesis argues that both The Feminine Mystique and the criticism it provoked were necessary and Friedan’s work gave women a shared language for their discontent, while its limitations pushed them to demand a feminism that was broader, more inclusive, and more responsive to the full extent of women’s lived experiences.
