Picturebooks and Translation: Rachel Bright and Jim Field in Polish

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przedstawienie głównych problemów przekładu książek obrazkowych. Powstała z myślą o poszerzeniu wiedzy o tym mało zbadanym obszarze przekładoznawstwa. Składa się z trzech części. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie do tematyki literatury dziecięcej. Zdefiniowano tam książkę dziecięcą oraz przedstawiono jej historię, ze szczególną uwagą poświęconą jej rozwojowi w Anglii i w Polsce, jako że to właśnie na tych obszarach powstała i funkcjonuje analizowana później seria autorstwa Bright i Fielda. W rozdziale drugim przedstawiono problematykę przekładu książki obrazkowej. Została ona zdefiniowana, a następnie krótko przedstawiono jej historię i istniejące współcześnie typy. W dalszej części rozdziału wyszczególniono i opisano główne problemy dotykające jej przekładu: narrację, domestykację i egzotyzację, dialogi, elementy dźwiękowe oraz obraz. Na trzeci rozdział składa się analiza serii książek obrazkowych pod kątem pojawiających się w nich problemów tłumaczeniowych. Wyszczególniono ich osiem. Są to kwestie, między innymi: formy, warstwy dźwiękowej i wizualnej, nazw postaci i sposobu ich charakteryzacji, zmian w strukturze, semantyce i odbiorze tekstu.

The present thesis aims at presenting the main problems of picturebook translation. It was created to further the knowledge of this insufficiently researched field of translation studies. The thesis has three parts. First is the introduction to children’s literature. It contains the definition of children’s book, as well as its history, with special attention directed toward its developments in England and Poland, as it is there, that the analysed books by Bright and Field have been created and presently function. In the second chapter, the matter of picturebook translation has been presented. It provides its definition, brief history and currently existing types. Then, the main issues of translation of this type of books have been specified and described. These are: narration, domestication and foreignization, dialogues, sound elements and images. The third chapter is devoted to analysis of picturebooks for the presence of translation problems. Eight have been specified, including: form, visual and auditory layer, names of characters and the manner of their characterisation, changes to the structure, semantics and text reception.
