This BA thesis focuses on the psychological aspects of the feelings of alienation and rejection and on how they affect the main characters and the story in general. The first chapter is devoted to background information about the novel. An emphasis is put on Mary Shelley's private life, the inequality between men and women that she could not accept, and on her genuine interest in literature and science. The aim is to show how much this inspired her and, in consequence, influenced her most famous novel. Another aspect discussed in the first chapter is the novel's genre. The specific characteristics of a gothic novel, like setting and mood, allow readers to experience the story even more intensely as they contribute to the feelings of alienation and rejection, which is the reason why it is essential to draw reader's attention to this. In the second chapter the theme of alienation is discussed. The in-depth analysis of Victor Frankenstein and Robert Walton in relation to the theme of alienation helps us understand how it affects the characters and how they cope with it. These two characters were both similar to and different from each other and the goal is to show how and why. The third chapter centres around the Creature and how rejection impacts him. This section describes his life from the very beginning, from when he was abandoned by Victor, through his unsuccessful attempts to fit into society, to his transition into a monster. The BA thesis ends with conclusions that are the result of a thorough analysis of both the characters and the context in which the novel was written, and answers the question: "How important is it to feel accepted and integrated?".
