Omissions and generalisations in the Polish translation of the novel "Eld" by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergmark Elfgren

Praca licencjacka poświęcona jest przedstawieniu i analizie problemów związanych z zagadnieniem transformacji tłumaczeniowych, jakimi są opuszczenia i generalizacje oraz zastanowienie się nad wpływem tych zjawisk na jakość przekładu. Przedmiotem moich badań jest drugi tom trylogii młodzieżowej pod tytułem „Eld” autorstwa Matsa Strandberga oraz Sary Bergmark Elfgren, w tłumaczeniu Patrycji Włóczyk. W pierwszej, teoretycznej części pracy zajmuję się omówieniem zagadnienia krytyki przekładu, przytaczając opinię badaczy literatury, a także podejmuję próbę definicji pojęć kluczowych, przygotowujących czytelnika do części analitycznej, którymi są ekwiwalencja, opuszczenie i generalizacja. Prezentuję również materiał badawczy, koncentrując się na przybliżeniu okoliczności powstania powieści, sylwetki jej autorów, jak i tłumaczki. Porównuję również recepcję obu dzieł oraz prezentuję metody analizy, jakie zastosowałam w analitycznej części pracy. W drugiej, analitycznej części pracy zajmuję się analizą porównawczą szwedzkiego oryginału i jego polskiego przekładu. Na jej podstawie staram się ustalić jakie strategie obrała tłumaczka podczas przekładu powieści i dążę do wyciągnięcia wniosków z jej działań. W zakończeniu pracy zajmuję się podsumowaniem wyników analizy i przedstawiam wnioski, które z niej wyciągnęłam. Pracę zamykam streszczeniem w języku szwedzkim.

The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to present and analyse problems related to the issue of translation transformations such as omissions and generalisations, and to reflect on the impact of these phenomena on the quality of translation. The subject of my research is the second volume of the youth trilogy „Eld” by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergmark Elfgren, translated by Patrycja Włóczyk. In the first, theoretical part of the paper, I discuss the issue of translation criticism, quoting the opinion of literary scholars, and attempt to define the key concepts that prepare the reader for the analytical part, which are equivalence, omission and generalisation. I also present the research material, focusing on the circumstances of the novel's creation, the profiles of its authors and the translator. I also compare the reception of the two works and present the methods of analysis I used in the analytical part of the thesis. In the second, analytical part of the thesis I make a comparative analysis of the Swedish original and its Polish translation. Based on this, I try to establish what strategies the translator chose when translating the novel and aim to draw conclusions from her actions. In the conclusion of the thesis I deal with a summary of the results of the analysis and present the conclusions I have drawn from it. I conclude the thesis with a summary in Swedish.
