ALLEGORICAL INTERPRETATION OF HOMER’S ODYSSEY: FROM THEAGENES OF RHEGIUM TO HERACLITUS THE ALLEGORIST

Niniejsza rozprawa poświęcona jest omówieniu najważniejszych przedstawicieli alegorezy poematów homeryckich w okresie nazwanym przeze mnie epizodycznym. Rozpoczyna się on wraz z uczonymi żyjącymi w VI w. p.n.e. – Teagenesem z Region oraz Ferekydesem z Syros, kończy zaś na uczonym z I w. n.e. Heraklicie Alegorecie, który jest autorem pierwszej rozprawy (Problemy homeryckie) w całości poświęconej alegorezie Iliady oraz Odysei. Po krótkich rozważaniach nad obecnością alegorii w kulturze greckiej i rzymskiej oraz nakreśleniu w zarysie historii pojęcia alegorii przechodzę do właściwej części pracy, czyli omówienia koncepcji najwybitniejszych przedstawicieli wspominanego okresu w historii alegorezy Homera. Jak się okazuje historia alegorezy wiąże się w ścisły sposób z historią filozofii, toteż znaczną część pracy zajmują również próby opisania współzależności między tymi dwoma dziedzinami naukowymi. Najobszerniej zaś zostanie omówiona najważniejsza, według mnie, postać okresu epizodycznego – Heraklit Alegoreta. Wiadomo, iż w badaniach nad Homerem najwięcej kontrowersji budzi tzw. „kwestia homerycka”. W niniejszej pracy przedstawię również w jaki sposób badania nad Homerem mogą rzucić nieco światła na tą sprawę.

This dissertation is devoted to the discussion of the most important representatives of the allegorises of Homeric poems in the period I call episodic. It begins with scholars of the 6th century B.C.E. - Theagenes of Rhegium and Pherecydes of Syros and ends with a scholar from the first century A.D. – Heraclitus Allegorist, who is the author of the first treatise (Homeric Problems) entirely devoted to the allegoresis of The Iliad and The Odyssey. After a short reflection on the presence of allegory in Greek and Roman culture and the outline of the history of the concept of allegory, I move on to the actual part of the work – discussing the concept of the most outstanding representatives of the mentioned period in the history of Homer's allegoresis. As it turns out, the history of allegoresis is closely related to the history of philosophy, so a significant part of the work is also devoted to attempts to describe the interdependence between these two scientific fields. The most important, in my opinion, figure of the episodic period - Heraclitus Alegoret – will be discussed most extensively. It is known that in research on Homer the most controversial is the so-called „Homeric question". In this paper, I will also present how the research on Homer can shed some light on the matter.
