Cocktail party under the white and red flag – history, analysis and reception of the French translation of Dorota Masłowska’s debut novel.

Głównym tematem mojej pracy magisterskiej są związki między postacią tłumaczki – Zofią Bobowicz – a dokonanym przez nią przekładem powieści Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną na język francuski, w tym analiza tłumaczenia i zidentyfikowanie jego cech charakterystycznych. Punktem wyjścia są zaproponowane przez Lievena D’hulsta historycznoprzekładowe pytania pomocnicze, wśród których pojawia się, między innymi, pytanie o postać tłumacza. Zainteresowanie tą kwestią odsyła z kolei do Jeremy’ego Mundaya, który podkreśla istotną rolę badania archiwów, będącymi niezastąpionym źródłem poznania życiorysu jednostki, ale przede wszystkim zrozumienia podejmowanych przez nią decyzji. W pracy powołuję się na podarowane przez Zofię Bobowicz archiwum, znajdujące się w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej, a także na własne notatki z mojego spotkania z tłumaczką, które odbyło się 25 listopada 2021 roku w Krakowie. Zdobytą w ten sposób wiedzę prezentuję na tle zarysu pozycji się literatury polskiej na rynku francuskim od początku XX wieku aż do momentu ukazania się na rynku przekładu Wojny… w roku 2004. Istotną częścią pracy jest także recepcja utworu przez francuską krytykę literacką i zwykłych czytelników. Jako że jedną z głównych cech charakterystycznych debiutu Doroty Masłowskiej jest duże nagromadzenie wulgaryzmów, w pracy krótko omawiam, na podstawie literatury przedmiotu, trudności z przekładem tego typu języka. W rozdziale poświęconym szczegółowej analizie wybranych fragmentów powieści porównuję tekst polski z jego francuskim tłumaczeniem. Prowadzi to do wykazania cech charakterystycznych francuskiego przekładu i pozwala potwierdzić tezę o „ugrzecznieniu” prozy Masłowskiej przez tłumaczkę. Decyzje translatorskie Zofii Bobowicz zostają ukazane w szerszym kontekście.

The main topic of my thesis is the relationship between the figure of the translator – Zofia Bobowicz – and her translation of Dorota Masłowska’s novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną into French, as well as the analysis of the translation and demonstration of its characteristics. The starting point is the auxiliary questions proposed by the translation historian Lieven D’hulst, including a question about the figure of the translator. This, in turn, leads to the work of Jeremy Munday, who emphasizes the important role of researching archives, which are an irreplaceable source not only for learning about an individual’s biography, but above all understanding their decisions. In my thesis, I refer to the archive donated by Zofia Bobowicz, located in the Jagiellonian Library, as well as to my own notes from a meeting with the translator, which took place on November 25, 2021 in Cracow. I present the knowledge gained in this way against the background of the general situation in which Polish literature translated into French found itself from the beginning of the 20th century until the publication of the translation of Wojna... in 2004. An important part of my thesis is also the reception of the work by French literary critics and ordinary readers. As one of the main characteristics of Dorota Masłowska’s debut novel is a large accumulation of profanity, in my work I discuss selected reference literaturę regarding the difficulties with translating such language. In the chapter devoted to a detailed analysis of selected fragments of the novel, I compare the Polish text with its French translation. This leads to the demonstration of the characteristic features of the French translation and allows me to confirm the claim that Zofia Bobowicz “mollified” Masłowska’s prose. The translator’s decisions are presented in a broader context.
