Bolesław Prus’s Pharaoh in the light of Said's orientalist theory

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza „Faraona” Bolesława Prusa w perspektywie teorii orientalistycznej zaproponowanej przez Edwarda Saida. Praca została podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Autor także podzielił występującą w powieści orientalizację na dwa rodzaje, wyróżniając orientalizm na wewnętrzny oraz zewnętrzny. Pierwszy rozdział jest poświęcony wpływom dyskursu orientalistycznego na ostateczną kompozycję powieści. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony orientalizacji w świecie przedstawionym „Faraona”. Trzeci rozdział jest poświęcony strategiom imperialistycznym i kolonizacyjnym powieściowego państwa. Dzięki mojej analizie wykażę, że Bolesław Prus w "Faraonie" powielił znane orientalne figury i motywy, cyrkulujące w XIX-wiecznym dyskursie orientalistycznym. Jednak ta powieść nie tylko wyróżnia się swoją tematyką na tle innych dzieł polskiego realizmu, lecz także tym, że Prus wykorzystał orientalizację, aby opisać stosunki między narodami w "Faraonie" oraz stworzył powieściowy Egipt na wzór zachodnich imperiów kolonialnych, który przyjął ich strategie względem cudzoziemców.

The aim of this thesis is the analysis „Pharaoh” by Bolesław Prus from the perspective of the Orientalist theory proposed by Edward Said. The work has been divided into three chapters. The author has also categorized the orientalism present in the novel into two types, distinguishing orientalism into internal and external. The first chapter is focused on the influence of orientalist discourse on the final composition of the novel. The second chapter is focused on Orientalism in the presented world of 'Pharaoh'. The third chapter is focused on the imperialist and colonizing strategies of the novel's state. Through my analysis, I will show that Bolesław Prus in 'Pharaoh' replicated well-known orientalist figures and motifs, circulating in the nineteenth-century orientalist discourse. However, this novel is not unique for its subject matter compared to other works of Polish realism, but also in that Prus used orientalisation to describe relations between nations in 'Pharaoh' and created a novelistic Egypt on the model of Western colonial empires that adopted their strategies toward foreigners.
