The Image of the Middle East created by Orientalist Painters in the Works of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Stanisław Chlebowski. The Analysis of the Documentary Features in Their Painting with a Particular Look at Islamic Art.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest wykazanie, że dzieła Jeana-Léona Gérôme’a i Stanisława Chlebowskiego mogą być uznawane za jedne ze źródeł wiedzy o kulturze i sztuce islamu w Europie drugiej połowy XIX wieku. Przedmiot badań stanowią elementy sztuki islamu obecne w malarstwie wyżej wymienionych autorów. Pierwszy rozdział to baza teoretyczna, wprowadzająca w ogólną problematykę orientalizmu oraz kolonializmu. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest zagadnieniom związanym z malarstwem w XIX-wiecznej Europie, m. in. takim prądom artystycznym jak akademizm, romantyzm i realizm. Następnie zostały przedstawione życiorysy Jeana-Léona Gérôme-a i Stanisława Chlebowskiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich podróży na Bliski Wschód. Ostatni rozdział natomiast zawiera autorską analizę elementów sztuki islamu, występujących na obrazach obu artystów. Bardzo dokładnie zostały opisane architektura oraz rzemiosło artystyczne.

The aim of this study is to prove that the painting of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Stanisław Chlebowski can be considered as one of the sources of knowledge about Islamic culture and art in the second half of the 19th century. This dissertation focuses mainly on the elements of Islamic art appearing in the works of these two artists. The first chapter is a theoretical basis, introducing to Orientalism and colonialism issues. The second chapter is dedicated to 19th-century European painting and its phenomenons such as Academism, Romanticism and Realism. Next there are presented biographies of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Stanisław Chlebowski, with a particular look at their voyages to the Middle East. The last chapter contains an author’s analysis of the elements of Islamic art depicted in the works of these two painters. The Islamic architecture and artistic craftsmanship have been described in detail.
