English-French "false friends" - from a Polish learner's point of view

Niniejsza praca licencjacka dotyczy pojęcia "fałszywego przyjaciela": rodzaju błędu językowego odnoszącego się do par słów w dwóch różnych językach, które są podobne, ale mają różne znaczenia. Skupiając się na trzech językach: francuskim, angielskim i polskim, analiza ta ma na celu ukazanie roli "fałszywych przyjaciół" w trakcie nauki języka obcego.W pierwszej części, pojęcie "fałszywych przyjaciół" jest opisane wraz z jego historią i różnymi podejściami do tego zjawiska, jak również mechanizmy powstawania i przyczyny tego błędu językowego.W następnym rozdziale, zróżnicowane przykłady pokazują jak te pułapki leksykalne wpływają, wraz ze znajomością języka angielskiego, na naukę języka francuskiego z punktu widzenia polskiego ucznia. Analiza ta ma również na celu określenie roli użytkownika w badaniach nad "fałszywymi przyjaciółmi" oraz pokazanie, iż interferencje językowe wymagają podejścia interdyscyplinarnego.Wnioski zawierają podsumowanie analizy, pokazują konsekwencje opisanego błędu, jak również sposoby jak uniknąć tej fałszywej przyjaźni.

This bachelor thesis concerns the notion of "false friend": the type of error referring to the pairs of words in two distinct languages which are similar, but have different meanings. By focusing on three languages: French, English and Polish, this analysis seeks to show the role of "false friends" in the acquisition of the foreign language.Firstly, the concept of "false friends" is described with its history and different approaches to this phenomenon as well as its formation mechanisms and causes of this linguistic error.Varied exemplification in the next chapter demonstrates how these vocabulary traps influence, with knowledge of English, the studies of the French language from the point of view of the Polish student. The analysis aims also to determine the role of the user in "false friends" study and to show that the research into this linguistic interference must be approached from a broad, multidisciplinary perspective.The conclusions include a summary of the analysis, they show the consequences of the described error as well as ways to avoid this false friendship.

Ce mémoire de licence concerne la notion de « faux ami » : le type de faute portant sur les paires de mots dans deux langues différentes qui se ressemblent mais dont les significations respectives diffèrent. En se concentrant sur trois langues : le français, l’anglais et le polonais, cette analyse cherche à montrer le rôle de « faux amis » dans l’acquisition de la langue étrangère.Premièrement, on décrit le concept de « faux amis », son histoire, les difféfrentes façons d’aborder ce phénomène aussi bien que les mécanismes de formation et les causes de cette faute linguistique. L’exemplification variée dans le chapitre suivant sert à démontrer comment ces pièges du vocabulaire influencent, avec l’apprentissage de la langue anglaise, les études du français du point de vue de l’élève polonais. Cette analyse vise aussi à déterminer le rôle de l’usager dans la réflexion sur les « faux amis » et à montrer que l’étude de ces interférences doit se faire dans un cadre multidisciplinaire.Les conclusions comportent une récapitulation de l’analyse, ils présentent les conséquences de l’erreur décrite et des moyens d’éviter cette fausse amitié.
