Język postaci jako narzędzie konstrukcji postaci w Raju utraconym Johna Miltona

„Raj utracony” Johna Miltona to jedno z najważniejszych, a jednocześnie najbardziej wymagających dzieł literatury angielskiej. Trudność ta wynika przede wszystkim z podniosłego języka, w jakim poemat ten został napisany. Język Miltona odgrywa bardzo ważną rolę nie tylko ze względu na swój wkład w budowanie wysokiego stylu poematu, ale także z uwagi na rolę, jaką pełni w kreowaniu postaci i uwypuklaniu różnic między nimi. Praca ma na celu ukazanie retoryki bohaterów, jako elementu budującego ich charakterystykę oraz udowodnienie, że język każdej z nich wykazuje inne cechy. Próbuje ona jednocześnie wykazać, że aspekt ten ma wkład w epickość „Raju utraconego”. W pracy poddano analizie wybrane fragmenty języka Szatana, Boga i Adama oraz wnikliwie omówiono odrębność stylów, jakimi te postacie się posługują.

Paradise Lost is one of the most important and at the same time one of the most challenging pieces of English literature. The difficulty is certainly caused by the elevated style and complex diction of the poem. Miltonic language is vital to the epic not only because it adds to its grandeur but also because it allows the author to build his characters and accentuate differences between them. The aim of this thesis is to show the ways in which poetic language creates characters of Paradise Lost and diversifies their diction. Simultaneously, I try to prove that this diversity contributes to the epic scope of the poem. The study explores the main characteristics of the language of Satan, God and Adam, and discusses their diction in the chosen passages.
