Analiza koncepcji tożsamości miejskiego Indianina w powieści „Nigdzie indziej" Tommy'ego Orange

Tożsamość rdzennych Amerykanów to zawiły i wieloaspektowy temat. Pozostaje on kwestią sporną od czasów, gdy kolonizatorzy po raz pierwszy pojawili się na terenie Nowego Świata i zaczęli narzucać tamtejszym mieszkańcom zachodnie normy i zasady. Mimo tego, że w obecnych czasach Indianie stanowią wyróżniającą się mniejszość etniczną, często zapomina się o ich obecności współczesnym amerykańskim społeczeństwie. „Nigdzie indziej”, debiutancka powieść Tommy’ego Orange, opowiada historię codziennych problemów z odnajdywaniem tożsamości osobistej i kulturowej dwunastu rdzennych Amerykanów. Poprzez prześledzenie historii konfliktów oraz aklimatyzowania się rdzennych Amerykanów w miastach, praca ta łączy rzeczywistość z fikcyjnymi życiami bohaterów powieści Orange. Moja praca ma na celu przeanalizowanie stosunku bohaterów do ich pochodzenia oraz zdecydowanie, czy można mówić o czymś takim, jak odrębna “miejska” tożsamość rdzennych Amerykanów.

The subject of Native American identity is complex and multifaceted. It has been a matter of dispute ever since the colonists arrived in the New World and began to impose Western norms on Indigenous people. Although nowadays Native Americans are a distinct minority in the United States, their presence in the contemporary society is often overlooked. Tommy Orange’s debut novel titled There There tells a story of twelve urban Native Americans and their everyday struggle with searching fot their personal and cultural identities. By tracing the history of conflicts and the Native American urbanisation, this paper links the reality with the lives of Orange’s fictional characters. The aim of this thesis is to examine the characters’ attitudes to their Native heritage and decide whether a distinctive urban Indian identity actually exists.
