Irony in Paul Grice's pragmatic conception exemplified by the English-language television series Dr House.

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie problemu ironii z perspektywy pragmatycznej teorii Paula Grice’a. Rozważania oparte zostały na analizie wypowiedzi ironicznych występujących w brytyjskim serialu „Dr House”. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi przegląd najważniejszych stanowisk dotyczących implikatur konwersacyjnych na przestrzeni dziejów, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem teorii implikatury konwersacyjnej H. P. Grice’a. Rozdział drugi zwraca uwagę na trudności w dokonaniu jednoznacznej charakterystyki terminu ironii w ujęciu pragmatycznym, a także wskazuje na problematykę złożoności pełnionych przez ów pojęcie funkcji. Ponadto opisuje także związek i różnicę między pojęciami ironii i sarkazmu. Rozdział trzeci przybliża koncepcję ironii w ujęciu J. L. Austina i H. P. Grice’a oraz, przy uwzględnieniu rozważań zawartych w poprzednich dwóch rozdziałach, w ich kontekście ukazuje przykłady wypowiedzi ironicznych z serialu „Dr House”.

The aim of the work is to present the problem of irony from the perspective of Paul Grice's pragmatic theory. The considerations are based on the analysis of ironic statements appearing in the British series "Dr House". The first chapter is an overview of the most important positions on conversational implicatures throughout history, with particular emphasis on H. P. Grice's theory of conversational implicature. The second chapter draws attention to the difficulties in making a clear characterization of the term irony from a pragmatic perspective, and also points to the complexity of the functions performed by this concept. Moreover, it also describes the relationship and difference between the concepts of irony and sarcasm. The third chapter presents the concept of irony as presented by J. L. Austin and H. P. Grice and, taking into account the considerations contained in the previous two chapters, in their context, shows examples of ironic statements from the series "Dr. House".
