Peripheral Cinematography. B-class horror in the context of traditional horror cinema and Rick Altman's seven genre features

Swoją pracę poświęciłem próbie uchwycenia fenomenu określanego mianem horroru klasy B. Opisując historię tradycyjnej formy gatunku, począwszy od kina niemego, aż po zagadnienia współczesne, staram się wydobyć elementy, które będą istotne w kontekście dalszej analizy wybranych przykładów. W pracy prezentuję również kilka odmiennych definicji horroru, wydobywając z nich to, co najważniejsze, a zebrane uwagi konfrontuję z tym, jak określana jest b-klasowa odmiana kina grozy. Finalnie przeprowadzam analizę porównawczą sześciu filmów w kluczu siedmiu cech gatunkowości Ricka Altmana, starając się dociec, czy w kontekście horroru klasy B zasadne jest mówienie o jego odrębności gatunkowej.

My paper is an attempt to capture the phenomenon known as B-class horror. Describing the history of the traditional form of the genre, starting from silent cinema up to the contemporary issues, I’m trying to bring out the elements that will be important in the context of further analysis of the selected examples. I also present a few different definitions of horror, extracting what is most important from them, and confront the collected observations with how the b-class variation of horror cinema is defined. Finally, I conduct a comparative analysis of six films in the key of seven characteristics of Rick Altman's genre, trying to find out whether in the context of B-class horror it is justified to speak about its genre separateness.
