Le Clézio opisuje w niej swój pobyt w Afryce, swoje wrażenia, przygody i odczucia. Jest on i autorem, i narratorem, i głównym bohaterem swojej powieści. In reviewing his own memories and examining the information gathered about his father, Clézio portrays his parent and himself. The Africain is a story enriched by photographs which by the fact of belonging to collection of the Clézio family, it is the document showing the life of his father. The photographs reflect the nature of their author, his charm and his passion for the African country.
