Kwestie palestyńskie od lat zajmują stałe miejsce w nagłówkach prasowych i debatach akademickich. Odpowiednio, wydarzenia związane z wyborami do Palestyńskiej Rady Legislacyjnej w styczniu 2006 – okres przedwyborczy, wynik wyborów i jego konsekwencje, zostały dobrze udokumentowane. Większość relacji obracała się wokół zwycięskiej partii – Hamasu, jej zmaganiami z partią opozycyjną – Fatahem, nieudanymi porozumieniami politycznymi i wynikłą z tego przemocą, która doprowadziła do rozłamu terytoriów palestyńskich. Wśród wielu aspektów poruszanych w relacjach, jednym który objawił się w tym czasie była rola rodzinnych klanów w wydarzeniach dziejących się na scenie palestyńskiej, szczególnie w odniesieniu do Strefy Gazy. Pomimo tego nagłego wzrostu zainteresowania klanami, obraz przedstawiony w wielu publikacjach był powierzchowny. Klany były używane jako wytłumaczenie przemocy między partiami, bez włożenia większego wysiłku w poznanie wewnętrznej dynamiki tej “nowej” struktury.W niniejszej pracy moim celem jest zademonstrowanie wpływu struktury klanowej na palestyńską politykę. Zademonstruję to na przykładzie klanu Dughmush w Gazie i jego interakcji z rządem Hamasu w latach 2006-2012. W pierwszym rozdziale wprowadzę kluczowe czynniki dla powstania zjawiska plemienności na bliskim wschodzie. W drugim zaprezentuję przekrój klanu Dughmush w Strefie Gazy. W trzecim przedstawię rozwój relacji między klanem Dughmush a Hamasem jako władzą i pokażę dynamikę procesów przebiegających między nimi oraz dziejących się wewnątrz samego klanu.Z powodu braku źródeł które zajęłyby się tematem klanu Dughmush w sposób kompleksowy, do zbudowania mojej narracji będę korzystał z danych fragmentarycznych uzyskanych z szerokiego zakresu źródeł. Ten zbiór danych jest w dużej mierze niezbadany, stąd moja metoda zawiera w sobie pewien stopień nieścisłości. Wierzę jednak, że wartość tej pracy leży w jej korelacji rozproszonych informacji i kompleksowym przedstawieniu tego co na tą chwilę jest możliwe.

Palestinian issues have been a mainstay of news headlines and academic debate for years. Accordingly, events surrounding the elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council in January 2006 – the run-up, outcome and its consequences, were all well documented. Most coverage revolved around the winning party – Hamas, its power struggle with the opposing party – Fatah, the unsuccessful political agreements and violence that transpired leading to a split in the Palestinian Territories. Among the many aspects of this coverage one that surfaced during this time was the role of family-based clans in the developments taking place on the Palestinian scene, especially with regards to the Gaza Strip. Despite this sudden increase of interest in clans, the picture painted by a large number of publications is superficial. Clans were predominantly used as a means to explain factional violence, without much effort put into grasping the inner dynamics of this “new” structure.In this thesis my aim is demonstrate the influence of the clan kinship structure on Palestinian politics. I will show this based on the Dughmush clan in Gaza and its interaction with the Hamas government during the years 2006-2012. In the first chapter I will introduce the key factors for the emergence of tribalism in the Middle East. In the second I will provide a cross section of the Dughmush clan in the Gaza Strip. In the third I will present the developing relations between the Dughmush clan and Hamas as an authority and demonstrate the dynamics taking place between the two as well as within the clan itself.Due to the lack of sources dealing specifically with the Dughmush clan in a comprehensive manner I will resort to building my narrative out of fragmentary data produced by a multitude of sources. This collection of data is largely unmapped territory, therefore the process entails a certain degree of inaccuracy, but I believe the value of this thesis lies in its correlation of scattered information and in its comprehensive presentation of what is at this point attainable.
