The impact of the war in Ukraine 2022 on Polish-Ukrainian relations

W niniejszej pracy przeanalizowano współczesny rozwój relacji między Polską a Ukrainą, od początku nawiązywania wzajemnych relacji do wzmacniania i budowania silnych więzi, szczególnie w kontekście eskalacji wojny na Ukrainie. Rozpad ZSRR był momentem ważnej transformacji w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Uznanie ukraińskiej niepodległości w 1991 roku przekształciło polsko-ukraińskie relacje z zależności i kontekstu kolonialnego w interakcję między dwoma niezależnymi suwerennymi państwami, które samodzielnie określają swoją własną ścieżkę rozwoju. W obliczu wspólnych wyzwań między Polską a Ukrainą zawarto szereg uzgodnień, na podstawie których obie strony zobowiązują się do pokojowego rozwiązywania konfliktów i współpracy w celu promowania pokoju i stabilności w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Osobny wątek w relacjach polsko-ukraińskich stanowią aspekty historyczne, nadające im często prześladowczy charakter. Różnice w postrzeganiu, roli pewnych postaci czy wydarzeń oraz interpretacji faktów historycznych były niejednokrotnie źródłem nieporozumień i głównym czynnikiem powstawania narracji i stereotypów na temat sąsiedniego państwa. W zestawieniu wydarzeń i skutków wojny na Ukrainie polsko-ukraińskie relacje stają się symbolem solidarności i gotowości do pomocy. Bezprecedensowe wsparcie ze strony Polski, obejmujące nie tylko pomoc polityczną, wojskową i humanitarną, ale także wsparcie polskiej społeczności w walce z rosyjską agresją, wyraźnie zaznacza nowy jakościowy etap w relacjach polsko-ukraińskich.

This study analyses the contemporary development of relations between Poland and Ukraine, from the establishment of mutual relations to the strengthening and building of strong ties, particularly in the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine. The dissolution of the USSR was a moment of significant transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. The recognition of Ukrainian independence in 1991 transformed Polish-Ukrainian relations from a context of dependency and colonialism to interaction between two independent sovereign states that determine their own path of development. In the face of common challenges between Poland and Ukraine, a series of agreements have been reached, in which both sides commit to peaceful conflict resolution and cooperation to promote peace and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. Historical aspects constitute a separate thread in Polish-Ukrainian relations, often giving them a persecutory character. Differences in perception, the role of certain figures or events, and the interpretation of historical facts have frequently been sources of misunderstandings and the main factors in the emergence of narratives and stereotypes about the neighboring state. In contrast to the events and consequences of the war in Ukraine, Polish-Ukrainian relations become a symbol of solidarity and willingness to help. The unprecedented support from Poland, including not only political, military, and humanitarian support but also support from the Polish community in the fight against Russian aggression, clearly marks a new qualitative stage in Polish-Ukrainian relations.
