Artykuł poświęcony fotografiom autorstwa Ludviga Fossuma (1879-1920), misjonarza pracującego wśród Kurdów w Iranie, stanowi próbę ukazania znaczenia medium fotograficznego w praktyce misyjnej. Poprzez analizę wybranych zdjęć, publikowanych w czasopiśmie misyjnym "The Kurdi- stian Missionary", wydawanym przez Lutheran Orient Mission, ukazuje konteksty oraz zadania, jakie zdaniem misjonarzy fotografia miała pełnić. Nie ograniczały się one tylko do informowania i dokumentowania, bowiem celem fotografii było kształtowanie postaw otwartości i ofiarności, a przy tym większej świadomości misyjnej. Fotografia oferowała możliwość symbolicznego przeniesienia w przestrzeń misyjną, a dodatkowo poprzez swoją powtarzalność i możliwość powielania gwarantowała niezmienność idei misyjnej i kontynuację strategii obrazowania tej społeczności, wśród których prowadzone były misje, Kurdów.

The article devoted to photographs by Ludvig Fossum (1879-1920), a missionary who was working among the Kurds in Iran is an attempt to reveal the importance of photography in missionary practice. By analysing selected photographs that had been published in the missionary journal "The Kurdistan Missionary" issued by the Lutheran Orient Mission, it shows the contexts and functions that the photography was supposed to fulfill. The aim was not just limited to informing and documenting, rather the task of photography was to shape attitudes of openness and generosity and at the same time to create greater missionary awareness. The photographs not only symbolically offered a transfer into the missionary field, but also thanks to multiplication and reproduction, guaranteed, in a sense, the invariability of the missionary idea and continuity of visual strategy in the representation of the Kurds, among whom the mission was carried out.
