Writings of the Indian diaspora in Hindi and English. Comparative analysis of Usha Priyamvada’s and Jhumpa Lahiri’s chosen short stories

Niniejsza praca magisterska składa się z czterech rozdziałów - trzech teoretycznych i jednego analitycznego. Celem pracy jest omówienie obrazu diaspory indyjskiej w wybranych opowiadaniach Jhumpy Lahiri i Uszy Prijamwady. Opowiadania tych autorek poddane zostały analizie porównawczej w rozdziale czwartym. W rozdziale pierwszym przedstawione zostały wybrane teorie na temat pojęcia diaspory oraz jej najważniejszych cech. Jako źródła posłużyły przede wszystkim badania Stevena Vertoveca oraz Robina Cohena. W drugiej części tego rozdziału znajduje się także opis najważniejszych etapów w rozwoju diaspory indyjskiej oraz charakterystyka tej społeczności w dzisiejszym świecie. Uwzględniony został także profil diaspory indyjskiej w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Kanadzie, jako że są to kraje, w których rozgrywa się akcja analizowanych w ostatnim rozdziale utworów. Rozdział drugi jest omówieniem tradycji prozatorskich w indyjskiej literaturze w języku hindi i angielskim. W tym rozdziale zaprezentowany jest więc zarys historyczny wymienionych tradycji oraz ich charakterystyka i najważniejsi autorzy. Ponieważ utwory poddane analizie w ostatnim rozdziale poruszają tematykę indyjskich emigrantów, w rozdziale tym omówione zostało także to zagadnienie w obydwu tradycjach literackich. W rozdziale trzecim przedstawiona została biografia oraz charakterystyka twórczości Jhumpy Lahiri i Uszy Prijamwady. Rozdział czwarty jest analizą porównawczą wybranych opowiadań wymienionych autorek. Spośród utworów Uszy Prijamwady do omówienia wybrane zostały trzy opowiadania wchodzące w skład zbioru "Ktoś inny", jeśli zaś chodzi o Jhumpę Lahiri, to analizie poddane zostały wybrane opowiadania z dwóch zbiorów: "Tłumacz chorób" i "Nieoswojona ziemia". W zakończeniu pracy zawarte zostały wnioski płynące z analizy przeprowadzonej w ostatnim rozdziale. Do pracy dołączone są dwa załączniki - tłumaczenie własne opowiadania "Na lodzie, w blasku księżyca" oraz tekst oryginalny tego opowiadania.

This thesis is divided into four chapters - three of them are theoretical and one is analytical. The purpose of the thesis is to examine chosen stories of Jhumpa Lahiri and Usha Priyamwvada in order to demonstrate how the picture of the Indian diaspora is depicted in those narratives. Thus, motifs concerning diaspora in the chosen texts are compared and analysed in the last chapter of the thesis. The first chapter of the thesis is presentation of the chosen theories concerning diaspora and its most characteristic features. In this chapter I primarily draw from works of Steven Vertovec and Robin Cohen. In the second part of this chapter also the most important stages in history of the Indian diaspora are presented, as well as the most recent profile of the community. A brief presentation of the Indian diaspora in the USA and Canada is also included in this chapter, as those are the countries where the plots of the chosen narratives are set. In the second chapter prose traditions in the Indian literature in English and Hindi are discussed. As the short stories chosen to be analysed in the last chapter of the thesis raise the issue of emigration, the topic in both literary traditions is also presented. The third chapter is a brief presentation of Jhumpa Lahiri and Usha Priyamvada and their literary works. The last chapter is the comparative analysis of the chosen short stories of the two authors. For the analysis the following nattarives were chosen: Usha Priyamvada's three short stories from the collection "Someone Else" and several short stories from "Interpreter of Maladies" and "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri. Conclusions deduced from this chapter are included in the summary of the thesis. In the appendix two documents are attached: author's translation of the story "On Ice, in the Moonlight" and the original text of the narrative.
