The work “Memory, History, Narrative Identity – Literary Re-presentations of Post-Pogrom Reality in Skóra po dziadku by Mateusz Pakuła and Czystka by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska” analyzes the literature of the subject in terms of memory, especially that relating to the pogroms. The author attempts to find an answer to the question of whether the category of the poetics of memory can be an effective tool for studying the autobiographical post-pogrom literature represented by these works. Another important issue addressed in the thesis is the recognition of how the memory of ancestors and the legacy of pogroms affect the narrative identity of the authors. The work is divided into two parts: theoretical and analytical. The first chapter is devoted to presenting the most important considerations regarding the issue of memory. It outlines the specificity of memory: individual, communicative, collective, and cultural, as well as the various functions of memory and its connections with the literary medium. This part also addresses issues related to the category of the poetics of memory, the implicated subject, and narrative identity. The next two chapters are devoted to the analysis and comparison of Skóra po dziadku by Mateusz Pakuła and Czystka by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska. In the first of these, the author reflects on their relationship with memory. She examines how memory is passed on in the families of the authors, how fiction influences memory in the literary medium, and how the lack of memory transmission affects the consciousness of the authors. In the last chapter, the author reflects on the poetics of memory of the pogroms shaped by the analyzed texts and how they can influence cultural memory. This chapter also touches upon the theme of subjects implicated in the events of the pogrom. It also discusses how family memory and the legacy of the pogrom affect the narrative identity of the authors. The last issue addressed by the author is a reflection on the post-pogrom reality and the potential of Skóra po dziadku and Czystka to re-present it.
