Social functions of the customary wine drinking in the context of ritual The study of selected examples

The main goal of the thesis is to present the social functions of customs associated with the consumption of wine, and to explore the meaning that consumption bestowed upon the discussed customs.In the thesis, the difference between religious and secular rituals is investigated, as well as the validity of the ritualisation of daily behaviour. Another aim of the research is to determine the distinctive social role of good manners, and the importance of the knowledge of etiquette for an individual. It examines the significance of the quality of wine and proper way of serving it at social gatherings. Examples explored in the thesis include Greek symposium, passover, Christian liturgy, wine tasting, wine tourism, the French celebration Beaujolais Nouveau and ceremonies celebrating Dionysus. The analysis of these is targeted at stressing the ritual features of a given event and presenting different status markers for the elite social class of an individual. The thesis is seeking answer to the question of the symbolics of wine and its meaning for the particular customs.

Celem pracy było ukazanie funkcji społecznych obyczajów związanych z konsumpcją wina oraz symboliki wina i jej znaczenia dla owych zwyczajów. W pracy omówiono kwestię różnicy pomiędzy rytuałem religijnym a świeckim, zasadności rytualizacji codziennych zachowań, znaczenia stosowania zasad dobrych manier dla jednostki, oraz ich dystynktywnej funkcji społecznej, jak również przywiązywania wagi do jakości wina i odpowiedniego sposobu jego podania podczas spotkań towarzyskich. Omówione w pracy przykłady to ceremonie na cześć Dionizosa, sympozjon grecki, Pesach, liturgia chrześcijańska, degustacja win, enoturystyka, oraz francuskie święto Beaujolais Nouveau. Ich analiza ukierunkowana była na uwypuklenie cech rytualnych danego wydarzenia oraz na ukazanie sposobów zaznaczania elitarnego statusu społecznego jednostki. Szczególna uwaga została zwrócona na kwestię symboliki wina i jej znaczenia w poszczególnych zwyczajach.
