Christians in contemporary Israel and the Palestinian Territories

Przedmiotem pracy magisterskiej jest problematyka dotycząca mniejszości chrześcijańskiej w dzisiejszym Izraelu i Autonomii Palestyńskiej. Region ten charakteryzuje się dużym zróżnicowaniem kulturowym, narodowym, etnicznym, a przede wszystkim religijnym. Stanowi on ważne miejsce dla trzech religii monoteistycznych – judaizmu, islamu oraz chrześcijaństwa. Starano się przedstawić pozycję chrześcijan w dwóch odmiennych społeczeństwach i systemach politycznych, a także określić, czy prawo do wolności religijnej mniejszości jest w nich rzeczywiście respektowane.W pierwszym rozdziale została przedstawiona charakterystyka społeczności chrześcijańskiej w Izraelu i Autonomii Palestyńskiej pod kątem demograficznym, pochodzenia etnicznego oraz organizacji życia w społeczeństwach żydowskim i muzułmańskim. Rozdział drugi zawiera ogólny obraz i historię wspólnot chrześcijańskich w Ziemi Świętej. W rozdziale trzecim przedstawiono i zinterpretowano izraelskie i palestyńskie akty prawne odnoszące się do swobód obywatelskich, a przede wszystkim wolności religijnej. Podjęto się także rozważań nad istotą i udziałem prawa koranicznego w budowaniu prawa pozytywnego w Autonomii Palestyńskiej. Czwarty rozdział stanowi próbę określenia faktycznej pozycji chrześcijan w społeczeństwie izraelskim i palestyńskim. W tym celu wykorzystano dane pochodzące z aktualnych raportów organizacji zajmujących się prawami człowieka oraz wolnością wyznania. Przedstawiono także akty dyskryminacji chrześcijan z ostatnich lat.

The subject of this M.A. thesis is to show the issue of Christian’s minority in contemporary Israel and the Palestinian Territories. This region is characterized by a great cultural, national, ethnic and religious diversity. It is an important place for three monotheistic religions – Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying the position of Christians in two different societies and political systems and also establishing if the right to religious freedom of minorities is respected in reality.Chapter one shows the characteristic of Christian community in Israel and the Palestinian Territories in terms of demographic, ethnic origin and the organization of social life in the Jewish and Muslim societies. Second chapter summarizes an overview and history of Christian communities in the Holy Land. Third chapter contains presentation and interpretation of Israeli and Palestinian acts relating to the civil rights, especially religious freedom. It was also needed to describe essence and role of Quran’s law in the construction of positive law in the Palestinian Territories. Chapter four is an attempt to determine the actual position of Christians in Israeli and Palestinians society. For this purpose, data from a recent report of organizations dealing with human rights and freedom of religion were used. Acts of discrimination of Christians in recent years were also presented.
