The process of integration of postcolonial ethnic minorities in France

The second half of the 20th century in France was marked by a large-scale settlement of immigrants from former French colonies in Africa and South-East Asia. Until then the role of immigration in the nation building process was almost completely ignored. Thanks to the traditional policy of assimilation immigrants from other European countries and their descendants were successfully incorporated into French society and, in the course of time, they became almost “invisible”. However, this situation changed when newer waves of immigrants, originating in formerly colonized regions of Africa and South-East Asia began to settle in France. A large part of the society feared that Africans and Asians would not be able to integrate and that they would threaten the national cohesion. In the 1980's and 1990's French people almost hysterically asked questions about their national identity. The aim of this work is to determine the constitutive elements of the French nation and to examine how the process of incorporation of postcolonial ethnic minorities into French society was shaped. The author does not seek to evaluate the French model of integration of immigrants, but rather to check whether it applies to the social reality.

W II poł. XX w. na terytorium Francji masowo zaczęli osiedlać się imigranci z dawnych kolonii francuskich w Afryce i południowo-wschodniej Azji. Do tego czasu rola imigracji w budowaniu narodu była przez Francuzów niemal całkowicie ignorowana. Dzięki tradycyjnej polityce asymilacyjnej imigranci z innych krajów Europy i ich potomkowie byli skutecznie inkorporowani do społeczeństwa i z czasem stawali się w nim praktycznie „niewidoczni”. Wraz z napływem do Francji postkolonialnych mniejszości etnicznych wiara społeczeństwa w zdolności integracyjne własnego państwa została jednak poważnie zachwiana. Na przełomie lat 80. i 90. Francuzi powszechnie zaczęli zadawać sobie pytania o własną tożsamość narodową i o zagrożenia płynące dla niej ze strony nowych fal imigracyjnych. Celem niniejszej pracy jest określenie elementów konstytutywnych narodu francuskiego oraz zbadanie, jak w tak określonych ramach teoretycznych kształtował się we Francji proces integracji postkolonialnych mniejszości etnicznych. Jednocześnie intencją autorki nie jest badanie zasadności francuskiego modelu integracji cudzoziemców, ale sprawdzenie jego faktycznego zastosowania w rzeczywistości społecznej.
