Restriction of Press Freedom by Authorities in the Philippines in the Light of Reuters Publications from 2021-2022

Niniejsza praca zajmuje się tematyką ograniczania wolności prasy przez władze w Filipinach podczas rządów autorytarnego prezydenta Rodrigo Duterte. Głównym jej celem jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób agencja Reuters prezentuje tę problematykę w swoich depeszach. Przyjęta przeze mnie hipoteza badawcza zakładała, że wśród publikacji agencji Reuters dotyczących Filipin znajdują się materiały omawiające sytuację dziennikarzy i mediów, aczkolwiek nie wyczerpują one w pełni omawianego problemu. Zależało mi na ocenie profesjonalizmu agencji Reuters w relacjonowaniu niniejszego problemu.Aby zbadać powyższe zagadnienie, dokonałam analizy zawartości depesz Reuters z ostatniego roku prezydentury Duterte. Narzędziem badawczym wykorzystanym do przeprowadzenia analizy był klucz kategoryzacyjny, zawierający 22 pytania, dotyczące formalnych aspektów budowy oraz treści depesz.Praca została napisana w oparciu głównie o zagraniczną literaturę naukową z dziedzin medioznawczych i politycznych. W pojedynczych przypadkach, bazowałam również na polskojęzycznych publikacjach.Wyniki badań wykazały prawdziwość założonej hipotezy. Depesze agencji Reuters cechowały się stronniczością w przekazie i pomijały istotne dla przedmiotu badań wątki. Tematyka materiałów była powtarzalna i skupiała się na pobocznych aspektach filipińskiego sporu medialnego.

The following thesis deals with the issue of restrictions on press freedom by the authorities in the Philippines during the rule of authoritarian President Rodrigo Duterte. The main purpose of this research is to examine how the Reuters agency presents these issues in its publications. My research hypothesis assumed that among the Reuters publications regarding the Philippines there are materials discussing the situation of journalists and media, although they do not fully exhaust the discussed problem. I wanted to assess the professionalism of Reuters in reporting this issue.To investigate the above issue, I analyzed the content of Reuters publications from the last year of Duterte's presidency. The research tool used to conduct the analysis was a categorization key containing 22 questions regarding the formal aspects of construction and the content of the messages.The research was written mainly based on foreign scientific literature in the fields of media and political science. In individual cases, I also relied on Polish-language publications.The research results showed that the hypothesis was true. Reuters publications were characterized by a biased message and omitted important threads related to the subject of the research. The topics of the materials were repetitive and focused on peripheral aspects of the Philippine media dispute.
