Ethnographic Film as Thick Description. Visual Method in the Light of Interpretive Anthropology

The main hypothesis of this paper is that the traditional scientific analysis can or even should be completed with ethnographic film (compound of three elements: images, sound and text). I consider the ethnographic film as a tool in the paradigm of interpretive anthropology, as one of the forms of thick description. In this paper I assign the criteria for thick description, then for ethnographic film, which allow me to inspect how four classical ethnographic films fulfill them.

Podstawową hipotezą pracy jest twierdzenie, że tradycyjna analiza naukowa może być uzupełniona o film etnograficzny, rozumiany jako całość złożona z trzech elementów: obrazu, dźwięku i tekstu. Rozpatruję film jako narzędzie w paradygmacie antropologii interpretatywnej, jako jedną z form opisu gęstego. W pracy wyznaczam kryteria opisu gęstego, następnie filmu etnograficznego, żeby na koniec rozważyć, w jaki sposób konkretne realizacje filmowe spełniają wyznaczone przeze mnie kryteria.
