The Italian Emigration in the United States of America and the Problem of the Identity Based on John Fante’s Works

Moja praca magisterska porusza problem tożsamości włoskich emigrantów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Podstawą moich refleksji na ten temat są wybrane dzieła Johna Fantego, to jest Odissea di un wop oraz Chiedi alla polvere. W pierwszym rozdziale analizie zostaje poddane samo zagadnienie migracji. Ponadto przedstawione zostaje tło historyczne, socjologiczne i kulturowe emigracji włoskiej w Ameryce. Zostaje także pokrótce scharakteryzowana literatura włoska w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Pierwsza część następnego rozdziału skupia się na biografii Johna Fantego. Później, w oparciu o opowiadanie Odissea di un wop, podjęta zostaje kwestia tożsamości dziecka migrantów. W ostatnim rozdziale, bazując na powieści Chiedi alla polvere, poruszony zostaje temat tożsamości dorosłego emigranta.

The subject of my thesis is the identity of italian emigrants in the United States of America. I based my considerations on some of John Fante’s works, which are a short novel Odissea di un wop and a novel Chiedi alla polvere. The first chapter exposes the analysis of the migration itself. Furthermore, the historical, sociological and cultural context of the italian emigration in America is also described. There is also short description of the italian-american literature. In the first part of the next chapter I focuse my attention on the biography of John Fante. Then I make the analysis of the identity of the child of emigrants, and the analysis is based on the short novel Odissea di un wop. In the last part of the thesis, the analysis of the identity is based on the novel Chiedi alla polvere and concerns the identity of an adult emigrant.

La mia tesi magistrale si sofferma sulla questione dell’identità dei membri della migrazione italiana negli Stati Uniti d’America. La base per le mie riflessioni sono opere scelte di John Fante, ovvero Odissea di un wop e Chiedi alla polvere. Nel primo capitolo si fa l’analisi del fenomeno della migrazione stessa. Inoltre si presenta lo sfondo storico, sociologico e culturale della migrazione italiana in America. Si caratterizza anche, brevemente, la letteratura italo-americana. La prima parte del capitolo successivo si concentra sulla biografia di John Fante. Poi viene affrontata la questione dell’identità di un bambino e ragazzo e l’analisi di essa viene fatta sulla base del racconto Odissea di un wop. Nell’ultimo capitolo, sulla base del romanzo Chiedi alla polvere, è toccato il tema dell’identità di un italo-americano adulto.
