Machine and masculinity in Boris Vian's Red Grass (1950)

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza motywu maszyny oraz jego wpływu na postrzeganie męskich bohaterów w powieści Borisa Viana Czerwona trawa. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia maszynę jako głównego bohatera powieści, jak również wskazuje na powiązania dzieła z gatunkiem science-fiction. Następnie wyjaśnione zostaje pojęcie « machines célibataires », wprowadzone przez Michela Carrouges’a, oraz uzasadnione zostaje użycie owego mitu do analizy męskich postaci obecnych w powieści, Wolfa i Szafira. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na temacie destrukcji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem autodestrukcyjnego zachowania mężczyzn. Poruszona zostaje również kwestia powiązań postaci Wolfa z motywem szalonego naukowca. Metafora maszyny pozwala na ukazanie w pełni bezradności mężczyzn wobec kryzysu męskości.

This study seeks to analyze the motive of the machine and its influence on the perception of male characters in Boris Vian's Red Grass. The first chapter presents the machine as a main character and explores the connections of the novel with science fiction. The following chapter explains the notion of "machines célibataires" developed by Michel Carrouges, and justifies the use of this myth in the analysis of two male characters of The Red Grass, Wolf and Lazuli. The last chapter focuses on the theme of destruction, analyzed with particular emphasis on men’s self-destructive behavior. Wolf's associations with the character of the "mad scientist" are also being discussed. The machinic metaphor illustrates the helplessness of men in the face of the crisis of masculinity.

Le présent mémoire a pour objectif d’analyser le motif de la machine et son influence sur la perception des personnages masculins dans L’Herbe rouge de Boris Vian. Le premier chapitre présente l’appareil en tant qu’un personnage principal et explore les connexions de l’œuvre avec la science-fiction. Le chapitre suivant explique la notion des « machines célibataires » élaborée par Michel Carrouges et justifie l’utilisation de ce mythe dans l’analyse de deux personnages masculins de L’Herbe rouge, Wolf et Lazuli. Le dernier chapitre concerne le thème de la destruction, analysé avec un accent particulier sur le comportement autodestructeur des hommes. Les associations de Wolf avec le personnage du « savant fou » y sont également abordées. La métaphore machinique permet d’illustrer l’impuissance des hommes face à la crise de la virilité.
