Patterns of Culture on the Basis of Greek, Norse and Slavic Mythology

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie roli mitów w rozwoju kultury oraz wyeksponowanie wspólnych wzorców kulturowych występujących w wybranych mitologiach: greckiej, nordyckiej i słowiańskiej. Przedmiotem pierwszego rozdziału jest problem wieloznaczności i definicji mitu, funkcje i typologia mitów, relacja mit-religia i powrót do myślenia mitologicznego we współczesnej kulturze. Kolejnym elementem pracy jest charakterystyka mitologii greckiej, nordyckiej i słowiańskich w aspekcie ich genezy, motywów i postaci. Rozdział drugi dotyczy roli mitów w kulturze. Rozważa się w nim kategorię i funkcje wzorców kulturowych, szczególnie funkcję wzorcotwórczą mitów, oraz mityczne archetypy, symbole i paradygmaty, m.in wzorce heroizmu i mądrości w mitologii greckiej, ideały wojownika i rzemieślnika w mitach nordyckich oraz związek z naturą w mitach słowiańskich. Na koniec wskazuje się na obecność wybranych wątków mitycznych w kulturze popularnej, m.in powieści, filmy, gry komputerowe.

The aim of the thesis is to present the role of myths in the development of culture and to highlight common cultural patterns found in the selected mythologies: Greek, Norse and Slavic. The matter-object of the first chapter is the problem of ambiguity and definition of myth, the functions and typology of myths, the myth-religion relation and the return to mythological thinking in contemporary culture. Another element of the thesis is the characteristics of Greek, Norse and Slavic mythology in aspects of their origins, motifs and characters. The second chapter deals with the role of myths in culture. It considers the category and functions of cultural patterns, especially the pattern-making function of myths, and mythic archetypes, symbols and paradigms, such as the patterns of heroism and wisdom in Greek mythology, the ideals of the warrior and craftsman in Norse myths, and the relationship to nature in Slavic myths. Finally, the presence of selected mythical themes in popular culture, including novels, films and computer games, is indicated.
