Evolution of Woman's Role in Shinto

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie ewolucji roli kobiety w pierwotnym systemie wierzeń archipelagu japońskiego jakim jest shintoizm. Praca prezentuje pierwotną wysoką pozycję religijną kobiet oraz omawia etapy dalszej jej degradacji aż po stan współczesny we wszystkich wymiarach głównego nurtu tych wierzeń, którymi są shintoizm świątynny, cesarski oraz ludowy. Prezentuje ona zmiany jakie w roli kobiet zachodziły na przestrzeni dziejów i wyodrębnia ich przyczyny. Omówione zatem zostały wszelkie możliwe funkcje jakie kobiety mogą pełnić na łamach owych wierzeń, takie jak kapłanka, cesarzowa, szamanka, wyznawczyni a także bohaterka podań ludowych. Prześledzone zostały również zmiany jakie w funkcjonowaniu i przedstawianiu tych ról zachodziły. Praca wskazuje najważniejsze przyczyny owych zmian, wyodrębniając szczególnie wpływy buddyjskie, reformę Taika, restaurację Meiji, przekonanie o rytualnej nieczystości a także sam wpływ społeczeństwa i zakorzenionym w nim przekonań. Rozdział pierwszy skupia się na powstaniu, podstawowych założeń shintoizmu oraz czynnikach, które miały wpływ na jego kształtowanie. Nakreśla on także historię społecznej, politycznej i ekonomicznej sytuacji kobiet. Drugi rozdział natomiast prezentuje problematykę rytualnej nieczystości, powstanie shintoistycznego kapłaństwa, ówczesną w nim rolę kobiet oraz jej powolną zmianę. Skupia się on także na problemach z jakimi kapłanki muszą się obecnie borykać oraz omawia problemy wyznawczyń owej religii i wizerunek, który oczekuje się, że będą przedstawiać. Trzeci rozdział natomiast porusza temat dawnych cesarzowych i współczesny dylemat kobiecej sukcesji a także przedstawia historię i istotę kapłanek w cesarskiej świątyni w Ise. Czwarty rozdział pracy mówi o kobietach działających na łamach religii nieoficjalnej jako szamanki i ich pochodzeniu oraz analizuje przedstawienia postaci kobiecych w dawnych podaniach ludowych i ich współczesnych formach. W pracy przedstawione zostały również wnioski wynikające z analizy tematu.

The aim of this thesis is to present the evolution of the role of women in the original belief system of the Japanese archipelago which is Shintoism. While presenting the original high religious position of women, the thesis discusses the stages of its further degradation to the contemporary state in all dimensions of the mainstream of these beliefs, which are shrine, imperial household and folk shintoism.It presents changes that have occurred in the religious role of women throughout history and distinguishes their causes. All possible areas of women's activities in this religion have been discussed in this thesis, such as the priestess, empress, shaman, confessor and heroine of folk tales. It also follows the changes that took place in the functioning and perception of these roles. The thesis indicates the most important reasons for these changes, distinguishing in particular Buddhist influences, Taika reform, Meiji restoration, belief about ritual impurity as well as the very impact of society and the beliefs rooted in it. The first chapter focuses on the origins and basic beliefs of Shintoism and the factors that influenced its formation. It also outlines the history of the social, political and economic situation of women. The second chapter presents the problem of ritual impurity, the origins of a Shinto priesthood, the role of women in it and its slow change. It also focuses on the problems priestesses are currently facing and discusses the problems of the female confessors of this religion and the image that is expected to be presented by them. The third chapter, on the other hand discusses the topic of former empresses and the contemporary dilemma of female succession and also presents the history and importance of priestesses in the imperial shrine in Ise. The fourth chapter of this thesis talks about women who practice their beliefs in folk religion as shamans. It also presents their origins and analyzes representations of women's figures in folk tales and their contemporary forms. The paper also presents conclusions of the analyzed topic.
