Japanese literature and woodblock prints (ukiyoe) in the second half of Edo period – the works of Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige

Ukiyoe to japońskie ryciny drukowane na papierze za pomocą powleczonej farbą drewnianej matrycy – w Polsce zwane po prostu drzeworytami. Stanowią one jeden z najsłynniejszych gatunków sztuki japońskiej. Tematem niniejszej pracy jest rozwój techniki ukiyoe w drugiej połowie okresu Edo oraz twórczość dwóch mistrzów japońskiego drzeworytu, Katsushiki Hokusai'a i Utagawy Hiroshige. Autorka, rozpoczynając od przedstawienia warunków historycznych, w których narodziła się omawiana sztuka, analizuje rozwój techniki drukarskiej ukiyoe. Omówiony zostaje proces powstawania pojedynczej kolorowej ilustracji. Autorka analizuje także różnorodną tematykę późnych ukiyoe – przedstawia rozwój i dobór tematów na tle przykładów. Główną część pracy stanowi opis życia i twórczości największych mistrzów późnego drzeworytu japońskiego, Hokusai'a i Hiroshige. Szczegółowo analizowane są ich najbardziej znane dzieła i cykle w różnych etapach życia artystów. Praca wykazuję także zależności między sztuką ukiyoe i literaturą na podstawie zawartych przykładów z prozy i poezji. Niniejsza praca stawia sobie za cel przedstawienie niezwykle wysokich walorów estetycznych ukiyoe późnego okresu Edo poprzez twórczość omawianych dwóch artystów.

Ukiyoe is a term describing Japanese illustrations printed on special thin paper with the usage of wooden matrix covered in ink or paint – usually regarded in English as Japanese woodblock prints. These illustrations represent one of the most known Japanese art genre. The main theme of this thesis is development of ukiyoe technique in the late Edo period as well as presenting the oeuvre of two woodblock print masters, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. The author begins with explaining ukiyoe's historical and social background to analyze Japanese print techniques later – full process of making polychrome print is depicted. The author also analyzes late ukiyoe's themes, explaining them with showing examples. The main part of this thesis concentrates on life and oeuvre of the two most important late ukiyoe masters, Hokusai and Hiroshige. Their most outstanding works and series, made in different stages of their life, are thoroughly analyzed. Thesis also describes the relations between ukiyoe art and literature, based on the included examples containing prose and poetry. This thesis aims to present extraordinarily high aesthetic values in ukiyoe art of the late Edo period by depicting works of the two artists.
