Adaptation of historic buildings for hotel purposes on the example of the Old Town in Krakow

Niniejsze opracowanie poświęcone jest obiektom zabytkowym i procesowi ich adaptacji na cele hotelarskie, na przykładzie zabytków występujących na obszarze Starego Miasta w Krakowie. Na potrzeby przeprowadzonej analizy przyjęto następującą definicję obiektów zabytkowych – jest to stara i cenna budowla przejawiająca dużą wartość historyczną i naukową. Natomiast hotele, stanowiące najbardziej rozpoznawalny element bazy noclegowej, określono jako obiekty, oferujące szereg usług turystom, z których najważniejsza to zakwaterowanie. Przypisanie zabytkom funkcji hotelarskiej stwarza wiele korzyści zarówno dla rozwoju turystyki na danym obszarze jak i dla samego obiektu. Praca jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie jak często w obiektach zabytkowych wprowadza się funkcję hotelarską. Ponadto rozpatrywane są również cechy charakterystyczne dla tego typu budynków działające na ich korzyść ale również te które stwarzają pewne ograniczenia.

The article deals with historic buildings and the process of their adaptation for accommodation, on the example of architectural monuments located in the area of the Old Town in Cracow. For the needs of the analysis I assumed that historic buildings are those which have a long history, high historical and scientific value. On the other hand, hotels, which are the most recognizable element of the accommodation base, have been defined as objects that offer a range of services to tourists, the most important of which is accommodation. Granting a hotel function to monuments creates many benefits, both for the development of tourism in a specific area and for the object itself. The article is an attempt to answer the question of what percentage of historic objects this function is given. Moreover, the typical features for this type of buildings, not only this satisfying but also this which can be problematic, are taken into account.
