Westworld +. The Analysis of the Series in the Context of Posthumanism and Transhumanism

Praca magisterska pod tytułem „Westworld+. Analiza serialu w kontekście posthumanizmu i transhumanizmu” skupia się głównie na wizji przyszłości, jaką przedstawiają twórcy serialu „Westworld”, Jonathan Nolan i Lisa Joy. Posthumanizm i transhumanizm – dwa prądy intelektualne, w których ludzkość obecnie istnieje, prowadzą analizę tego tekstu kultury. W pierwszym rozdziale znajduje się omówienie humanizmów, jako wprowadzenie do warstwy filozoficzno-ideologicznej serialu oraz charakterystyka „quality television” i klasyfikacja „Westworld” jako tekstu postmodernistycznego. Kolejne trzy rozdziały stanowią omówienie najważniejszych wątków produkcji na podstawie trojga głównych bohaterów: Dolores Abenarthy, Mężczyzny w Czerni oraz Maeve Millay. W owych rozdziałach poruszane są zagadnienia sztucznej inteligencji i czasu w filmie, a ponadto omawiane są wątki mające największy wpływ na fabułę oraz rozumienie serialu; poszczególne wątki oraz postaci są osadzone i analizowane w kontekście posthumanizmu i transhumanizmu. Część będąca analizą produkcji opiera się na źródłach internetowych (forach oraz artykułach z internetowych magazynów) i na własnych refleksjach autorki.

Master's thesis entitled ”Westworld +. The Analysis of the Series in the Context of Posthumanism and Transhumanism” primarily focuses on the vision of the future presented in Jonathan Nolan's and Lisa Joy's series 'Westworld'. Posthumanism and transhumanism – two intellectual currents in which humanity now exists lead the analysis of this text of culture. The first chapter contains a discussion on humanisms as an introduction to the philosophical and ideological layer of the series, characteristics of “quality television” and classification of 'Westworld' as postmodern text. The next three chapters discuss the key themes of the production based on three main characters: Dolores Abenarthy, Man in Black and Maeve Millay. In these chapters the issues of an artificial intelligence and time in the movies as well as the themes that have the greatest influence on the story and the understanding of the series have been discussed. Particular threads and characters have been embedded in the context of posthumanism and transhumanism and analyzed. The part that analyzes the production is based on online sources (forums and articles from online magazines) and on reflections of the author of the thesis.
